Simple... Use an ax or a hatchet, just make sure the hole isn't big enough for someone to fall through. no bigger than like 8 inches.

you can try a axe or a ice chisel ( a heavy bar like a tankers bar ) make sure you tie a tether on it would be a shame to throw any thing down the first hole through the ice. also check that if there is a reg. about hole size so people don't fall in and get hurt thats why the augers are only about 8" around

I had a few pops years ago:colors: and broke out the 40=inch Stihl chainsaw it made a real mess and a bigger mess with the cabins sleeping near by but it worked and we limited on trout and Pops:colors: that day.lol
The chainsaw was a bit of a cold starter after that:bigsmurf: lol

Make sure its deep saws spread the pain and you better have game in your arms and shoulders:bom:
My buddy took out his small tractor one year he had the options on her it worked sweet and quick but would not suggest this= we did not wear head protection, ear protection and jumped off of bridges trees and crashed dirt bikes daily in those days and beat the crap out of each other for fun:eye: :cyclops:
Maybe thats it! LOL
I miss those days very little rules little crime and mass fish and game:cheers: nobody locked there door on there house or rigs Go Figure

Never tried it, but if you have a battery operated reciprocating saw, you could give it a shot.

Spud bar or ax/hatchet. Just start about twice as big as you plan on having your hole, because it always "cones" down smaller than you started. Chainsaw works too, but usually that is for large holes (3'x3') for spearing. Like swedefish4life1 said, it is rough on the saw, so use an old one. And if possible, drain all bar oil out of it and try to get it as "dry" as possible without ruining it. Water is a good enough lubricant, and it helps on the pollution factor (also having an oil film on top of your hole is no bueno..:-" ) Best of luck bbt....just hope the ice ain't two feet thick!!!

oh yeah....i would also recommend glasses when chipping ice with a small bar or hatchet/ax......found that one out from experience.

Darwin awards style. Park your brand new Jeep on the ice, bring a dog, beer, and your friends. Then, take a lighted stick of dynamite and throw it out onto the ice. Observe as said dog retrieves the stick, which then blows a hole in the ice directly under the Jeep.
