I've always been a bit of a nerd, so if you're not into Sci-fi disregard this post. Hehheh. Anything in the Dune universe is intense and (in the case of the Butlerian Jihad trilogy) very...I hate to say life changing, but they make you think about ethics and human nature. Well, that's what I got out of them. And any book with a unique quote like "What do you despise? By this you are truly known." at the begining of each chapter can't be all bad. My two cents.

Great post, sorry I’m adding to it a little late. I love to read autobiographies from guys who have served in Iraq. My favorite is Lone Survivor, by Navy Seal Marcus Luttrell. Marcus and 3 of his closest Seal buddies go on a covert mission in the mountains of the Hindu Kush and get into a fire fight with over 100 enemy terrorists. They kill almost all of them during the several hour ordeal but all 3 of Marcus’ brothers were killed in the battle. He tells their story from Navy seal training, through every minute of the firefight, to coming home after his tour without his 3 friends. It is by far one of the best books I have ever read, three times! Other great books I have enjoyed, all told by the guys themselves are; One Bullet Away by Nate Fick, The Last True Story I Will Ever Tell by John Crawford, Kill Zone A Sniper Novel by Jack Coughlin, The Warrior Elite The Forging of SEAL Class 228 by Retired Seal Captain Dick Couch, My War Killing Time In Iraq by Colby Buzzell which I just finished. I am currently reading House to House by David Bellavia. These are all action packed true first hand accounts written by these great guys sharing their experiences in Iraq. Amazing reading! Another great read is Last Man Down by NYFD Battalion Captain Richard Picciotto who was inside the WTC in a stairwell several floors up and survived when the WTC building collapsed on top of him. I also thoroughly enjoyed the true crime book Chasing The Devil by Dave Reichert which is not military related but a “can’t put down first hand account of the investigation of the green river killer from day one to the arrest and conviction.”

On another reading subject I have also read Purpose Driven Life by Pastor Rick Warren which improved my lifelong walk tenfold. Inspired, I followed Rick Warren’s book by reading both the Old and New Testaments (NIV) cover to cover which took me about 4 months, reading at night before going to sleep. That was about 4 years ago. I’ve been re-reading both testaments ever since. A few other Christian books I have enjoyed are new releases John’s Story and Mark’s Story, both by Tim Lahaye who is one of the writers from the Left Behind Series.

Kite Runner is a must read IMO. Lots of discussion about it, and it's a great book.

I agree Sam - I am in the middle of reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author (Khaled Hosseini) now, so far it is much darker than Kite Runner, really makes you appreciate what you've got.

In between Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, I read Queen Of The South by Arturo Perez-Reverte. It is about drug smugglers, the rise of one in particular and takes you through Mexico, Spain, Moracco, etc. I enjoyed it as well.

I also have my carryover book (it carries me over to the next book) I picked up at the National Geographic Garage Sale (oh-boy NOW I am showing my geekness ) called Histories Great Untold Stories by Joseph Cummins. Did you know there was once a Pope (Steven VI), who had such an issue with a preceeding Pope (Formosus I), that after Formosus died Steven had him dug up, then put his corpse on trial, where it was questioned and found guilty of pergury and violating church cannons?!?

I've got an oddball title if you can find it. Its called "Hand Logging". its a book about a man's life who travels the coast line of alaska fishing and trapping.his wife is also quite an adventurious soul.

Sweet...is it an autobiography of sorts? It sounds very intersting. I'm going to check it out. Have you read "Stones From The River" by Ursula Hegi?

You wanna read a good book, read "The Ruins" by Scott Smith. Stephen King says it's the best horror novel of the new century. It's unreal - full of horror and disects human nature. Just finished it in 2 days, it's only about 510 pages, so it's an easy read. You'll feel attached to each one of these characters as the book goes on, and the ending is so painful and heartwrenchingly sad.
