Just wondering if anyone has taken advantage of the exchange rate and purchased equipment out of Canada. I'm looking at a new Yamaha 9.9 but I don't know how the fees at the border work and if they would offset the savings.
I'd appreciate any information you might have. Thank you.
New outboard purchase in Canada
Re: New outboard purchase in Canada
Several years ago, US/WA dealers would refuse warranty service on Canadian bought outboards (Evinrude). Not sure if that is the case now, but you might ask around.

He's said the magic words, he's correct in saying the warranty will void if you purchase in be and bring back. It has to do with taxes involved with the border crossing. Don't know why byput Yamaha and Mercury both will do the same on warranties.
If it ant broke don't fix it, otherwise pay the guy to do it right!

maybe it's because two separate divisions are providing the warranty.
Re: New outboard purchase in Canada
It's called collusion. The manufacturer doesn't care where you buy the equipment, they receive their $$ from the dealers. The dealers on the otherhand, they only make money if you buy from them, taxes have nothing to do with it is the government which collects and keeps those. In rare instances the warranty is covered/paid for through an insurance policy and those can stipulate coverage areas.
As far as the US Government is concerned, outboard motors fall under a tarrif schedule that allows free import. The motor needs to have the appropriate markings to show it meets US certification requirements and our State will still want to collect their tax.
