Pinks on the Nooksack

Post by GoingtoFish » Fri Aug 28, 2015 2:03 pm

I'm heading to Birch Bay over Labor day weekend to go camping. Will be doing a lot of Crabbing but was hoping to try for some Pinks in the area. The Nooksack river runs through Ferndale. Any suggestions where I should go in that area?

WDFW just closed the Nooksack until further notice. There is one section still open, read the WDFW website for the area

It's closed from Slater road up past the forks. I'll be closer to the mouth west of Ferndale.

There is access right before the slater road bridge if you are coming from I5. Since it is closed above the bridge obviously head down river not up (I see you have already discovered this out). After about a 10 minute walk down the dike you will see a few footpaths that lead to a nice sized bar. I have fished that with some success in the past. The only thing to really watch is how much rain we will be getting up here. You sneeze wrong and the nooksack is muddy with zero visibility for a week. I know its a week away, but if you aren't sure you can pm me. I drive by it everyday.

Kinda figured it would be with all the rain. Probably won't be cleared up by the weekend but I can always hope. :)

Thanks guys!

Well the main stem opened back up so if you don't mind going up further it may clear up by then. Down in ferndale I doubt it will though....suuuuuper high and looks like chocolate milk

I went to the river on Sunday the 6th. The river had great color and people were catching pinks. All the fish I saw caught were really bright. Unfortunately I did not hook into any but it was still a good time.
Thanks guys for keeping me posted on what was going on.

I've heard they are still as low as ferndale and dime bright as well. I've heard of one silver being caught...not sure if I believe that or not...

There are a few bright fish from what I've got in the last couple days but are outweighed by their slimy friends. Hooked two coho today and lost em. Bummed out about it but they were really exciting

Good to hear some of the fish still are in decent shape. And some early silvers too sweet! I'm heading there today so if its successful I'll post a report
