Fur or Marabou?

Post by salmonator_1228 » Thu Dec 22, 2011 12:48 pm

I just started tying my own jigs. I wanted to know which has the best action. I bought both rabbit fur and marabou and I haven't tested them yet.

Define "best action", they are different, that is why they are both used. Both will catch fish.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

What is your target? For twitching, a rabbit fur strip can really impart some great action and is typically used for bass. If you're fishing for salmon and steelhead under a float, then both rabbit fur and marabou impart good action if tied correctly. You can find some good youtube vids on both tying and what each looks like under water.

Alright thanks guys. I was aiming for salmon and steelhead. I used the rabbit fur for twitching, and I wanted to know your guys' preference.

Don't have a preference, but Marabou is what I use. It works well when adding a chenille collar. Haven't tried rabbit fur. Hear it's a good choice for simple patterns such as below. I'd just make some of each for variety. On any given Sunday, ya know?

THAT I can attest to. Both steelhead I caught were on my own jig. Great feeling.

Last year I caught my first steelhead on my own jig. I loved it.

Rabbit fur for me, if you put in the water, it pulses.

I'm usually a float-jig guy, but I always have eggs with me. Today I didn't even bother with the jigs. I saw EVERYONE hooking up on eggs.

There are some achievements which are never done in the presence of those who hear of them. Catching salmon is one, and working all night is another.

dont get me wrong jigs are great. but i have NEVER in my entire life been standing next to a jig fisherman and been outfished by them while i was using eggs. NEVER! once during coho season a guy had a small jig and huge shrimp on the jig, he caught more than me, but thats practically just bait. ive never been outfished by a jig on steelhead in years, although they do work.
