Female Tiger muskies

Post by muskie guy » Mon May 07, 2007 9:07 am

Hey guys; I caught a muskie out of Silver Lake, Spokane Co., this weekend that had eggs leaking out of her. I know that biologically the eggs are sterile and could not develope if fertilized by muskie or pike. But has anyone else ever seen this? I always wondered myself if muskies react to the warming water by preping for a false spawn. All of the smaller muskies I've caught this year have come from different depth and cover than this female. She was in a classic spawing area of the lake. Interesting. I took a picture of the eggs, but it didn't turn out very well. They were very tiny, about 2mm in diameter and yellowish in color. I posted a report with a picture if your interested.

This from the :

page 3. 2nd paragraph.
Who knew? Probably smarter and older musky anglers than me, I guess, but ya sure learn a lot on these pages.
" The resulting hybrid male is sterile,
but some of the females can be fertile. "
My fishing partner says he's never seen one.
Gee, guess this will be a good question to put to Bruce Bolding of WDFW at the Muskies Inc. meeting ... ;) wink.

BUSTED!! That's actually a small perch, I photo shopped it. Good quality of work though, eh?

Yeah, there's a lot of good info out there. After reading a recent posting about cold weather and tigers, I was looking at a Dec/Jan issue of Musky hunter mag. It had an article about catching true muskies, where the season is open, through the ice. It stands to reason that a cross between true muskies and Pike (cool water kings) would be susceptible to similar angling. And would be active in certain bodies of water, where their forage base moved into the shallows and they fallowed in early spring. I'm glad I have a few lakes like that over here. Is Tapps fairly quick to warm?
