reality check in the dove fields
Do you know that moment in life when your son finally beats you in basketball or some game that you thought he would never be able to beat you at? Well it arrived for me opening day of dove hunting. My thirteen year old shot eight and I shot four. I heard about it all the way home and this morning before work. I should make him cook them himself.

Boy, does that bring back memories. When my son was about 5, I installed a basketball hoop on the garage. The first time we shot baskets, he was so upset with me making so many shots, he began to cry. That was upsetting for me and from that point on I accidentally would miss some shots so he could win in "horse" several times.
His love for the game never subsided. He kept up the hard work from that time on and when he started high school, he was selected to play on the varsity team when he was a freshman. He played starting lineup all four years of high school. Today, he is a teacher over in Burlington and recently was hired as the head coach for the Burlington-Edison boys basketball team.
Thinking back to those little tears so many years ago, now brings tears to my eyes today. I couldn't be prouder of him.

Many fond memories of dove hunting growing up in Eastern WA with my father. Still have a scar on my thumb from trying to clean my first dove. Sharp knife...
Cannot remember if I ever shot more than him or not, but I do remember dropping a dove flying broadside at about 70 yards with my 16 gauge, in some good wind. Was one hell of a miracle shot, and I remember how surprised/ shocked my father was. Good times.

just had to comment on this one...
i'm currently in my second year of college in california and as fun as it is, this is a tough time of the year for me because every saturday morning when I wake up. I wish I was out duck hunting or fishing with my dad and kicking his butt at either one of those things.
