Big baits for big fish

Not all the time, my uncle has caught 3-4 pound largemouth on a 1/16 oz or 1/8 oz jig.

You can catch trophy bass on anything really, the Clear Lake (California) record bass 17lbs was caught on a crappie jig. But when you throw huge baits, you usually run into plus sized fish. I catch 2lb fish on 8-16 inch baits all the time!

Put it this way, a 2lb largie, can eat a 9 inch shad.

He is talking about BIG fish. About 3x the size your uncle caught.
If you think 3-4 lbers are big, then we need to get out and I'll get you on 3-4blers no prob.
And yes, big baits are the way to go. Now, there is always a time and place for every bait. And all sizes of baits can and will catch all sizes of bass. But the higher percentage baits, like matching the forage being consumed by the fish, and thinking about that forages size is always your best bet. If you know exactly what a lake is producing as food and its size, then I can gaurantee under the right conditions you'll catch all sizes of bass. And yes, even the monsters.
Personally I like Hudds, big worms and big bodied jig. To me, in my mind I get rid of all the rats by throwing the bigger baits. But yes, the smaller fish will attack a big bait too. And if your in an area that is producing 2lbers on a big bait and your after an 8lber, I would just pick up and move. I have found my bigger fish to be in areas that for the most part don't produce smaller fish.

I hook into bluegill on a 1 ton (1 oz jig) and pig quite often. That picture is pretty impressive. I can't wait to get on the water, just got back from Cabelas and got a new dropshot rod and shimano reel. Just a matter of time!

Oh no, I'm still very much a big bait guru, I have to downsize for y'all. The only thing I need a drop shot rod for is the first 5 fish ;) after that I get the log and rope out to huck the trout out there. ;)

In reality, you could leave the dropshot rod in the locker, throw the big bait right out of the gate for the entire day, and really put the California smack down on these Northwest fairy wand wielders.

Haha that was hilarious! I'll play fair for the first half, and then hope everybody can catch up! I need a lake or two to thaw out here in the east soon. I'm itching to get out on the water. Even if I have to use a drop shot all day. I need to touch a bass! I need to head out to banks and potholes to graph some areas that will hold in spring/spawn.

Spring on Banks, you cant keep 'em off your hook. Most insane fishing trip I have ever had was late May on Banks. Unreal numbers of fish in that lake. I often find myself daydreaming about Banks in the spring.....:shaking2:

Well thats a good and bad thing; I'll catch a bunch of fish, but so will everybody else. I never get to pre fish before tourneys, but up here in WA I need to get pre fishin' in.

Prefishing??? Just find a good looking stretch of bank, pick your desired depth, pitch out a little plastic bait and drag it around like everybody else. This will save you some $$$$.
