Getting new plates :(
Getting new plates :(
Went in to the DOL today to renew my trailer tabs and found out my plates were "out of date" and had to buy new plates. Sucked. Ended up shelling out $37.50 for the trailer alone and still have to register the boat next week when payday rolls around.
I hate being nickle and dimed when it comes to buying stuff from the state but it seems to be the norm. Just like all the dang endorsements and added fees we get rocked with when we but fishing licenses. I feel like nowadays whenever I go in to a GOVT building to purchase just about anything I am always plagued with, "Oh, I'm sorry.... It looks like this year we started a program that....." $$$$$Cha Ching Cha Ching Cha Ching $$$$$
BTW My old plates are just fine, "reflective coating" is not worn at all.
And we are STILL in a huge budget deficit in WA! haha. QUIT SPENDING MONEY WE DON'T HAVE!:safe:

Funny you brought this up. I also had to renew my tabs yesterday and yes they got me with the new plate gig to. I told her mine were just fine she told me every three years they have to have new ones. In three years i`ll put the old ones back on. They were fine.
RE:Getting new plates :(
Suppost to be every 7 years. Unless they changed that and didn't tell me.

I figured my first trout this year cost $93.00 in licensing the boat, trailer, freshwater fishing license, launch fee, and 3 gallons of gas.

The best part of this whole new plate scam is that they also charge an additional $4 reflectorization fee on top of the new plate fee. I looked up Senate Bill 6379, which introduces this new fee, and found that it is not supposed to go into effect until June 2011. The DOL didn't think this was an issue and I've brought it up with my local representatives. I'm not shocked that I haven't heard back from any of them. I wish we could just fire the lot of them and start from scratch.

I try to not even THINK about how much I spend on the fish I catch! It would definitely be cheaper to go fishing at the grocery store! Even at 16$ a pound for Hali's and close to that for Kings. One damn expensive addiction, but hey, I love it :safe:clarkbre wrote:I figured my first trout this year cost $93.00 in licensing the boat, trailer, freshwater fishing license, launch fee, and 3 gallons of gas.

Yep, the reflectorization fee is a joke, but I expect things like this from our legislature. I had to pay for new plates when we renewed the registration on our MH, and questioned the $70 something "rail fee", what the heck am I paying a rail fee for on a motor vehicle that travels on roads???? Since we purchased this from a King County resident, I assumed it was a light rail tax which Spokane County residents don't have to pay. Nope, it's charged to everyone with a recreational vehicle in addition to the registration fee.
License plates ($27.75 plus the sub-agent fee) are replaced every 7 years per the DOL website. Want to keep the same plate number? Pony up an additional $20.

Used to be that the poor folks fished to help feed the family. Now, since the government found out it was fun, you have to mortgage something just to go fish. Pooh!

I second all the above statements. I spend so much on fishing it's crazy. Just lucky my wife knows it makes me happy. And as for firin' em all and startin' from scratch, need I say more!Matt wrote:I try to not even THINK about how much I spend on the fish I catch! Yup, a little retarded; plus needing a front license plate on our rigs, don't like that either. Plus, the plates are so cheap for them to make now as they're not even pressed, it's all smooth with stickers......glad I can get the boat, canoe and the pontoon in the back of my truck....seperately of course. I've used our boat trailer once; and it's just easier to put it in the back of the truck or on my utility trailer.

There is a reason the state needs a flat surface on the front of curvy vehicles. Certain agencies need that flat surface for reliable feedback for collecting revenue.

RE:Getting new plates :(
the bottom line is the new plates don't cost anymore than just the tabs........... I guess I'm missing the complaint / bash on the state.?.?

RE:Getting new plates :(
The year that you need the plate replaced, every 7 years, the state charges you an additional $20. Every 7 years as they say the 'properties/reflection materials wear off.

You won't be the year you have to replace plates because of the "worn out relfectorization". Like AMX said, it's an additional fee over and above your normal registration/tabs.Bodofish wrote:I guess I'm missing the complaint / bash on the state.?.?

RE:Getting new plates :(
The reflector issue is interesting since you can still use a 1963 plate issued on a 1963 car. How are those exempt? I understand the licensing the trailer, boat, fisherman, blah, blah, blah, but how many vehicles do you see with bad reflectorization?
I think not just trailers but cars too it's excessive to change the plates every 7 years.

RE:Getting new plates :(
Hmmmmm I've replaced the plates on a number of rigs. Guess I never noticed any extra fee. Oh well, if I have to worry about a 20, I'm in trouble. Let's keep those cons a work'in!

RE:Getting new plates :(
Sort of in-line with this thread...As it is now June, remember to renew your boat's registration before you get out on the water. The Seattle police like to hang out around the bridges on Lake Washington this time of year and nab those who may have forgotten.
RE:Getting new plates :(
I too will be getting new plates after some dumb boater somehow smashed my left trailer light and bent up my liensce plate. I hate fishing lake sam in the summer. Just too many dip sticks out there.
