Nice Quality 2-Piece Casting Rod?
I'm on the hunt for my 1st baitcasting combo. Have zero experience with them. So this should be interesting...
I've narrowed my choices for reel. Most likely the Abu Garcia Revo SX and followed by Shimano Curado.
I want to be able to throw heavier line and lures easier.
I will be mainly throwing 1/4-3/4 oz cranks. Occasional heavier jig or swimming jig. So almost a jack of all trades... sort of.
But the trouble I'm having is see what's available for 2-pieces. Due to storage and traveling issues, I cant use a 1-piece. I was hoping for a 7' rod too. I like that size.
I hoping to keep the price under $150 but if the rod is nice, I'm willing to splurge.
Any suggestions?

There are so many options it is hard to even suggest any. I'd go to a Cabelas in the area and just start checking them out. Don't let any brand go untested.FishingFool wrote:I'm on the hunt for my 1st baitcasting combo. Have zero experience with them. So this should be interesting...

Too much water, so many fish, too little time.

FF. I just picked up a Shimano Curado 201 E7
http://www.lakesidereels.com/servlet/th ... -LH/Detail
I matched it to a Lamiglas XL 704C 4 power rod. I like them both very much. I can't say enough about the Shimano Curado. I had a Pluegher (sp?) Medalist bait caster a few years ago. I tried like heck to learn to cast that bait caster...
With the Shimano Curado, it was like 3 casts..... and no questions to ask. The braking system is very easy to adjust and understand.

Go to cabela's and look at the magtouch (or other house) brand rods. I have their two piece casting rod with close enough specs to what you're looking for. The mags are $99 retail and every six months, they go half off. I have caught bass, trout, and pink salmon with it. I have used just about every bass technique with it from t-rigs, drop shotting, buzz bombing, and even DT 6 type cranks.FishingFool wrote:I'm on the hunt for my 1st baitcasting combo. You're in luck. It is 7' long.
I have the Med powered, 2-piece casting mag touch and its specs are:
Cabelas Mag Touch
Power: Medium
Action: Fast
Type: Casting
Length: 7’
Model #:MGTC702
Pieces: 2
Lure Weight Range:1/4 - 1 oz
Line: 10 – 17 lb.
Color: Black
Comments: Graphite Handle
However, given what you want the rod to do for you, I would recommend its MH brother, the MGTC703-2

If they don't have it in stock, you can order it online or phone and have it shipped to the store. If you do this you will avoid shipping costs and everyone needs an excuse to visit cabelas once in a while.
These rods also have Fuji Alconite guides, which are the best bang for the buck anywhere before you head up toward the SIC guides and for its $100 price tag this is great because you typically find alconites on rods in the $150 plus price point.
As for the reel, curado all the way given your choices. If you have to know, that's what's on my mag touch.
BTW, I went for them when they went down to $49.99 (as I mentioned they do this twice a year it seems) and when I ordered it, the operator told me that I had a $25 credit because I applied for their CC that last time I was in the store. Needless to say, I got a $99 for $25. It is one of my trunk rods. One of my best scores ever. Now go get yours.

I see they have one of their models on sale. The Cabela's XMLTi rods. Reviews seem to be very happy with it also. It's just slightly more than the Mag Touch.
Unless the Mag Touch was on sale for $50... lol.

RE:Nice Quality 2-Piece Casting Rod?
Yeah, I got pretty lucky with the timing. I have only heard very positve things about those XMLTi rods. If I wanted to go cork over graphite, it would definitely have been a candidate. Good luck on your final decision.
RE:Nice Quality 2-Piece Casting Rod?
Tell me about it, every G. Loomis I can afford is a 8'-9' 1 piece. When I spend that type of money, the pole rides on my dash board, so no lommis for me....yet.FishingFool wrote:all the "nice" one I see online are 1-piece. lol.
If I was looking for a nice casting rod I would either go with Shimano or St. Croix. But Lamiglas and Fenwick arnt bad either. Ugly sticks are tough to beat for the price, but really arnt for me. If you go w/ ugly stick look into their "lite" series rod. I have a 7' spinning rod and it is probally the best spinning rod I have ever owned, my lamis, croixs, and fenwicks take a back seat to the ugly stick lite, not sure if they have casting rods though. Check out http://www.ffo-tackle.com/ and http://www.fishandsave.com/. Both sites are kind of hit and miss, but have tons of deals.

I'm with GPC on the shimano. I bought a Shimano Clarus casting rod last year and it's the best rod I have ever owned and it only cost me 99 bucks. You should look into one. As far as the reel goes, in my opinion you can never go wrong with an Abu Garcia C4.

RE:Nice Quality 2-Piece Casting Rod?
Was out on Lake Meridian today. 1st outting the new combo. Had motor problems right off the bat. Couldnt get my motor started. Notice I was leaking something. Managed to clear myself away from the dock with the trolling motor.
Was leaking gasoline. From the hose that goes from the fuel pump I think, to the carburater I think.
It was the end that was connected to the carburator. The connection looked fine, but when I would pump the gasoline bulb, I see gasoline gushing out from that area. So I was able to remove the clip and inspect the hose. Looked fine. Everything was nice and snugged.
I put it back on and squeeze the bulb and looks fine now... Very odd.
Motor started fine and was 0 problems the rest of the day.
So I find what I think looks like a good spot. Tweak my reel for the lure. Get ready for my 1st cast. Wind up for an overhead cast. Lure splashes 10ft in front of me and BAM! Birdnest! , lol.
I managed to fix the nest without cutting. Started throwing sidearm casts. Works much better for me. Keep trying overhead once in a while and eventually got another birdnest that required cutting.
I can not cast overhead with the baitcast reel. Lures keep landing right in front of me. Sidearm, I can launch it pretty well, but not as accurate yet. Still working on that.

trick for over head is to load the rod by whipping it back and forth 2 to 3 times

RE:Nice Quality 2-Piece Casting Rod?
That is a tell tale sign of the thumb coming off of the spool too late. It usually happens to those who are new to casting reels that come from a spinning background, but not always. The release time of your thumb off of the spool to initiate the release of the line and lure is ever so slightly earlier on a casting rig than the forefinger's release of the line to do the same thing on a spinning rig.FishingFool wrote:

Picture 12 oclock above you, 9 oclock directly in front of you and 3 behind you. The approximate time your thumb should come off of the spool is somewhere between 12 and 1 oclock. It might feel awkward but you will get accustomed to it soon.
This also will solve the accuracy of the side arm cast. If it's sailing woefully to your left (if you're right handed) that also means that the thumb is letting go too late.
