Required equipment on your boat??

I just read a report from g-man for his recent trip to Lk. Wa. He mentioned that the authorities were out/and about and he saw them do a safety check. Can someone point me to a link or something to what TRUELY is the required safety etc. equipment for ones boat. Maybe it matters for what waters you are on? Maybe it goes by size of boat.
I think this is a good topic that we all could use a refresher on.

Of course PFD's per person,
Red "Help I've fallen and I can't get going" flag?
flairs?? (seams a bit much, at least for fresh water)
first aid kit?

what do ya know?

Functional lights for the night. Other than that you pretty much have it all covered.

btw... I don't read much reports from you... I have to assume you are getting out. Are you of the mindset,, if I don't boat anything above a dink,,, don't bother sending a report?

PFDs for all persons on board
Fire extinguisher
Backfire flame arrestor except on outboards

Functional navigation lighting
Night time visual distress signals
Daytime visual distress signals (16' and greater on federal waters)
Whistle, horn, or bell
Flags for divers/skiers (if applicable)
Carbon Monoxide sticker

Pretty much if you are running a motor, you need a fire extinguisher. Ya never know. Safety first.

As far as the reporting, well I still get out at least once a week maybe twice. But my boy is still in his cast from breaking his femur and if I have to choose between the two, I will stay home and hang out with him. I definitely haven't been out as much as I would like. I have actually gone more than 2 weeks without being on the water. :cyclopsan

I could be wrong, but I think that a throwable flotation device is REQUIRED on vessels 16' or larger. Probably doesn't hurt to have even on the smaller boats too.

I have PFD's enough for everyone and 2 extras.1fire extinguisher,a hand held flare,and a flare gun check exp date.I carry 2 smoke bombs incase they didnt see the flares.My carbon monoxide sticker,1 gal spare gas,a spare pipe, bottle of tequilla for medicinal purposes..( no booze just teasing).Also the registration,few extra spark plugs,an extra plug for the bottom and rope to start a flywheel.Im not one for taking chances.

Tech. you don't need a fire extinguisher in your 14' foot lund Quad. If your boat is less than 26', has an outboard motor, and your fuel tank is NOT stored in an enclosed compartment, you do not need a fire extinguisher. I don't need one either, but I carry it regardless. You never know...if you don't use it yourself, maybe you can help someone else out!! (BTW, the link from Hewesfisher is a great reference, just delete his comma on the end and it should work)

I carry this as well, not for in the boat of course, but on the salt you never know where you could get stranded and for how long......

2 years ago I was checked by the coast guard(Elliot Bay) after they checked a fishing guide boat and the 2nd item they ask to see is your fire extinguisher,PFD was no#1 item asked to see; and I too have a 14 foot aluminum boat. Few years ago I was checked by the Police boat on (Lake Washington) as I was flipping jigs under docks for bass to make sure I had all the required boat equipment onboard during the beginning of boatting season.

I was going from this link Mud Duck. I guess it's open to interpretation how it reads. I have also been stopped by the Coast Guard twice in both my boats. I even got the yellow checkdown slip so I don't have to be checked again for one year (just show them my passed safety checklist and I can "skip" the boarding next time, at least that is what they said.). I didn't get in trouble for no extinguisher in my 12'er.

At any rate, best just to bring one then you don't have to worry about it!!

If you get a Fire Extinguisher get a Marine type. The regular ones will be somewhat useless for a gas/oil fire .The marine Extinguishers are usually white in color not red.Thats an item that just cant hurt to have on board any size vessel.
