I'm excited to announce that Oregon outdoor writer Pete Heley will be contributing weekly articles and fishing reports for Oregon.
Pete is a self-published author of many books about Oregon fishing, as well as his most recent book published on Washington bass fishing. He is passionate about fishing for all species of fish, lake, river, and saltwater. His reports will be an invaluable addition to our Oregon Fishing Reports web site.
Here's more about Pete:
Pete Heley was born in Shelton Washington and moved to Oregon at age
3. Lived on a farm for four years located 15 miles from Mapleton on
Indian Creek in the Siuslaw River drainage. Moved to Lakeside, Oregon
on Tenmile Lakes at age 7. Attended Lakeside Elementary, North Bend
Junior and Senior High schools graduating in 1966. Then attended
Southwestern Oregon Community College and the University of Oregon.
Became obsessed with fishing in high school and have been most
interested in trying to catch the rarest fish species in each body of
water. The most impressive fish landed so far have been (1) a 15+
pound brown trout caught above an impassable falls on the middle
section of the Deschutes River (definitely a stream-reared fish); (2)
a 22 pound coho salmon on Tenmile Lakes; and (3) a 9 1/2 pound
largemouth bass taken from Loon Lake after dark from a float tube.
Pete's number one fishing rule is "Fish for the very smartest, most
wary fish - and you will be surprised how many "dumb" ones you catch
along the way".
The biggest mistake, in Pete's opinion, regarding fish management is
not trying to make a viable fishery for some species, or another, out
of every remotely suitable body of water and increasing, in any
reasonable way, access to as much fishing water as reasonably
possible. Such an ongoing effort would reduce overcrowding on certain
waters. Presently, in Oregon, it seems that at some future point,
every angler will be forced to fish for the same fish species in the
same fishing spot - may it never become true.
"In an effort to make anglers aware of overlooked fishing spots and
fish species, I became a publisher of small fishing books. While I am
cautious about telling people how to fish and what to use, I
definitely try to make them aware of every fishing spot I am aware of
- and all the fish species of interest to anglers in those spots."

Hi Pete,
Finished reading your Washington Bass & Guide book. Good material. I like it. Its basic and to the point on the lakes in the state. I did notice though you have Evergreen Reservoir in your Musky section but ..in the bio of the lake on page 42-43 you do not mention that there are also walleye and Musky in the lake too. No biggie. Just saying.
If there is anytime you want to hit any of the the Musky lakes let me know. I'd be honored to have you in my boat and hopefully get you your first musky in my Frabill.
Well coffee is almost done so I'm going to run up to Tapps right now to hopefully, get a musky in my Frabill.
Thanks for a great read. Todd Reis
