Next weekend is the annual Discovery Bay Salmon Derby and I am wondering how many fools like myself will be in it.

Wish I could be there. Blackmouth fishing is probably one of my favorites, if not my favorite. The taste of fresh blackmouth (cooked and consumed within hours after catching) is amazing. Nothing like fresh, moist blackmouth fillets hot off the BBQ!!!

When youre up to your rear end in alligators, its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

I hear there have been a good supply of bigger then average blackmouth roaming this year..Some larger then 8lbs and up to mid to upper teens I have heard have been caught....

I've also heard of a few natives being caught and released here and there, which is a great sign that there are some wilds still out there...

Discovery Bay is between the towns of Port Townsend and Sequim.

The main launch and weigh in areas are:
John Wayne Marina
Gardiner Boat Ramp
Port Townsend Boat Haven

Tickets are $30 per person for 1 or all 3 days.

Saturday and Sunday, 16-17 February, from daylight until 3 pm, continuing Monday, 18 February, from daylight until 12 noon. The award ceremony will begin at 2:00 pm on Monday, at the Gardiner Boat Ramp.

$3000 goes for first and a lot of cash and prizes go towards the raffle too. Your almost guranteed to walk away with something.

Check out their site, it is pretty well put together.

Last Saturday was the Roche Harbor Derby and the winning fish was 19.68 pounds. That is an incredible $10,000 fish. Hopefully this year the derby at Discovery Bay will kick out a few big ones too. Hope to see a few of you at the weigh in station at the Gardner Boat Ramp.

Yep there are always a few big blackmouth running around that manage to give people quite a fight...
Most blackmouth are just above legal size, 4-5 lbs, but every once in a while a few mid teens fish make an appearance. Some native some hatchery....

Wait for Area 9 to open for clipped fin retention this summer. Last summer was one of the best salmon fisheries we had in a while. Quota went fast but plenty of big fish (clipped and wild) filter through Area 9 in midsummer on the way to Elliot Bay or any of their rivers for spawning....

Not uncommon to see some 20-30 lb fish being released because they had one too many fins

How did you do stampie?

113 fish caught by 110 anglers is a great tourney. Nice weather for it too.
First place went to a 19.4 lb fish. Nice catch!

I believe they weighed in the fish when they were cleaned and gutted. A 20lb blackmouth is monstruous
