Northwest Fishing Reports

I am posting this one here... because it's not really off topic, it's fishing, and it's not really an out of state report either.

Has anyone had any experience fishing in Hawaii? I am going for the first time in Feb. I've got almost two weeks.
I will be on the "Big Island" Hawaii that is. Of course there is info. available regarding charters, but if anyone can tell me something about what to fish for, and maybe recommend a charter that you have used.

I've taken a light spinning outfit with me on my last two trips. I fish right from the beach using a wooden "bobber". There's lots of bait stealing fish there. I've used shrimp chunks and squid. I've landed some puffers and some other fish I didn't know the names of.

You can catch lots of Dorado (a.k.a. Dolphin Fish) out there. They're supposed to be one of the best eating fish.

Thanks for the tip on that Capt. Jeff Rogers. I googled him, and he looks like a squared away guy.

good luck! my dad just returned yesterday after spending 2 weeks there. he fished 6 out of the 12 days there, and, had nothing but good things to say. cuaght some of those dorados, and said my walleye tastebuds would never go back to normal!HA! awesome eating. im heading over tonight to spokane to fish fourth of july, and hopefully Pops will kick down on some. Enjoy yourself, and cant wait for the report!!!!!!

Quadradomus, Good luck on your Hawaii trip. Looks like you may get your dolphin before me. Ha! Ha! So jealous. When I go somewhere knew to me, I look for the small bait shops and spend some time visiting the propieter for the best local scoop and guide info. It's the best information you can get. Don't forget to pick up some lures as a way of thanking him for his time and help.

honokohau harbor is the main charter place if you want to try and find a seat the charter office keeps a daily list of boats that may have seats avai.or if you to fish off the rocks,go around the outdoor restruant to the rightfollow it till you get to the water ,fish off the rocks,i have seen fish being taken there.when i go i have used a smaller boat called the why not.nice guy,tries to get fish .another fishing treat is ,there is a nother guy and the charter office should be able to help ya,but he doesnt go out deep .he fishes just outside the marina,and everyone has a rod.unlike the charters where your sharing time on the seat.keep in mind though,most boat crews keep the catch unless you talk about before hand.i like to work a 50-50 split.then some will try to charge you more if you want some of your catch.another option,is to go down to the deep sea port,past the wimaia turn off,there is a state park and a little futher down is a little local boat lurnch,but people fish both at the state park and along that area by the boat lurnch.there is a rock jetty,that makes up the deep sea port,dont know if you fish off it or not.last but not least would be to go the outher past capt cooks ,down to the south point.there is a rock cliff that the locals have been fishing off for years.its really a blast to watch how they do it.nothing like a milk jug as a bobber.while your at the habor the white building is a great cafe.and has some of the best fish and chips around.after the days over ,alot of the ships crew go in for luch and talk story

quad,sounds like this may be a first time for ya.if it is,if your a member of aaa then stop by there offices.they have maps ,guides lots of stuff free because your a member.another good web site is konaweb.com lots of folks that live and visit great comments both good and bad.great web cam of the wall by the dock off the ocean.where are you staying?
