The E-Rotory Bait Holder by Pro-Troll
Does anyone have experience using these things? I got to try one out today for the first time. Didn't catch anything, but my cousin has caught a big King using it. I like it. The way it holds your herring together you don't have to worry about it falling apart. The spin is excellent and you don't have to cut up the herring, you just put it in the clamp whole. And this little contraption has what's called the Echip in it that sends out charges replicating the discharge that the nervous system of a bait fish gives off. http://www.protroll.com/products/echip/
I was pretty amazed with it and feel that it would kill the salmon in the right situation but today it was off. We downrigged at 100-120' for 3 hours on the flats right off Point No Point. Didn't see anyone land anything and we didn't even meter a fish anywhere. Most exciting thing today was the weather and using this new (to me) setup.
I want to try this setup again but I not 100% sold on it either with the skunk today. Here is the website if you guys don't know what I'm talking about. http://www.protroll.com/ What do you think?

I don't think the Echips have much of an influence in the amount of fish caught. I do more saltwater salmon angling then any other type of fishing (or species) and I have never liked using the bait holders for cutplugs. While it does hold the herring in good, I find it to be less effective for targeting salmon...
fishnislife: If I were you, I'd try to find some newer spots "away" from PnP. PM me if you need some help. While it is a great spot to fish, especially when fall coho and summer kings are rolling through, there is more fishing pressure there then in other nearby areas which hold fish that are less pressured...
PS: Coho killers in glow green or coyote spoons in the cop car finish touched up with shrimp/anise smelly jelly and trolled 3 feet behind a green pro troll flasher doesn't catch ANY blackmouth....

I have never been a fan of the herring helmet sort of lures. But then again I have never actually used them. I like the good old fashon cut plug herring. But if it looked good to you Fishnislife, I might have to check them out next summer.

Thanks for the info. Sam.
Check them out gpc. It has a great spin to it and I trolled one piece of herring (no bites of course) for over 2 hours and it was still perfect when I brought it up.
Capt. John Keizer of http://www.salmonuniversity.com said that they tested the E-chip before it hit the market and that he was the one who suggested Pro-Troll add it to the flasher. He says that the E-chip out fished plain flashers 4 to 1.
I dunno.
Take what he says with a grain of salt or believe him. I lean on the side of trusting what he says. Now, out fishing 4 to 1 sounds like he may be getting kick backs from Pro-Troll, but it couldn't hurt to use them.

2 HOURS! really, I will have to pick up a few those for sure now. Herring arnt cheap and to go through 4 dozen in a day isnt too uncommon. Plus all my buddies want to cut there own herring (but dont know how) and dont realize how important it is for the herring to roll. Thanks

I bought 2 trays of herring and we ended up using only 2 herring all day. This would be perfect for your buddies. Honestly, even if someone hates to get their hands dirty (like the ladies
) becuase of having to cut up or handle the bait, they will find it easy to use with no mess.
I kind of sound like I should be on their payroll. What's up with that.

I actually just went to the Seattle Boat Show, and it just so happened that John Keiser was there doing a seminar on winter blackmouth. I didn't know it was going on and only caught the last half of his seminar, but he showed that rig as one of the set ups he uses.
He also said that he adds an Echip to everything he fishes. He says he'll even put them in between a couple beads in a hoochie rig. Bottom line is, it can't hurt....unless you're talking about your wallet. I don't think those things are very cheap.
The main thing he stressed at the seminar, was if you're not catching fish, move. He said the key is to fish where the fish are....which is where the bait is.
He said that 60 percent of the winter blackmouth diet consists of candlefish, 30 percent is herring, and the other 10 are random squid and other baitfish. The impression i got was that his favorite rigs are spoons or ace-high flies.
