4-stroke on a 13 1/2 Gregor

Post by Firetiger » Tue Jul 19, 2016 12:49 pm

What is the heaviest outboard ( 4-stroke)I can put on a 13 1/2 Gregor (15" transom)?

What is a more reasonable weight?

Ahh, now I see the heaviest well I would say somewhere in the 70-100 lb range. Why are you trying to figure out weight?

Looks like a short shaft 4 stroke OB is in the 110 to 115 pound range. Put that much on the back seat and see how she floats. A modern 20HP will push that little boat like a scalded cat. My 9.9 Johnson pushes our 14' Sorenson about as fast as I want to go in a little boat. It's easy to get into trouble fast with a little boat and lots of power.

You can go to the max HP with out a problem. Your boat weighs about 190 to 200 lbs which is about the same as the duroboat i had. I ran a 2010 15 hp yamaha on my duroboat and with stock prop it did just a little more than 27 mph on the gps. That is with just me, 3 gallons of fuel, and a water proof bag of boat necessities( less than 50 lbs). With smallest prop made for the motor it did 25 mph on the gps. In my research i found the the 15 and 20 four stoke motors are virtually the same. The weight on a 15 or 20 will be right around 115 lbs. I would fish in a few places that i had a mile or 2 run, cruising at 21 to 23 mph on a calm day was not scary at all. In fact wide open was not scary either. Those little aluminum boats are fairly solid and surprisingly stable at higher speeds. Getting up on a plan take some care cause of the lack of weight up front, but once on a plain they ride fairly well at speed.

My question regarding, ‘what was the heaviest outboard you could put on a 13 ½’ Gregor’ was poorly stated.

Several years ago I replaced a 100 hp (2 stroke) Mercury with a 90 hp (4 stroke) Suzuki on a 17’ Arima. I liked the outboard, quiet, didn’t smoke, great gas mileage, and good performance.

The only thing I didn’t like was the weight. It was the heaviest 4 stroke in its class. It dropped the transom so low I removed the kicker. Handling with that anchor hanging off the transom was difficult. I was constantly watching for water coming over the transom.

Maybe you could put a 20 hp 4 stroke on the Gregor but a lighter 4 stroke would give you better performance, weight distribution, overall a better choice. It’s a fishing boat giving up a couple mph on the top end with a lower hp outboard was okay.
Restated. What maximum weight range 4 stroke outboard would give you good performance, etc. on the 13 ½’ Gregor?

From my experience with my duroboat i found that the boat did not ride much different no matter what engine i had on it. The first motor i had for the boat was a 1996 johnson 8hp 2stroke. It only pushed the boat about 20 mph. The 8 trolled the boat down really slow, like below 1.00 mph. My 15 i could never get it to troll down below 1.8 mph and that was with the smallest prop i could get.

By going to an 8 or 9.9 you will be dropping 15 to 25 lbs in weight. From what i have read 8 and 9.9 4 stroke motors weigh 90 to 100 lbs. In my opinion 25 lbs in a boat like that, wont matter. The only time you will notice the weight is when getting on a plane. With anything we drive, caution needs to be taken when adding HP.

Hello firetiger!
I have a 14' Gregor boat also. I have a 15 hp. Honda four stroke on the back of mine. Honda motors are the heaviest outboards by weight that is out there on the market. Now my boat has a three gallon tank in the center bench. I have an elec. trolling motor for the lakes. I can not troll slow enough on the lakes with a 15 hp motor. The attitude of my boat with just the Honda motor only, my self @close to 165 pounds & fishing gear puts the front of the boat nose high, therefore it acts like a kite if the wind picks up. If out in the sound & it gets choppy it will porpus on you trough the waves. When I go by myself in this boat I always put at least a 60# bag of sand up front. This helps keep the nose down in the water better. I like the 15 hp. for this size of boat. I can scoot pretty good across the water with two people in it.
The hp. that you need will depend on what type of fishing you are going to do. If you do use it in the sound you will have to keep your head on a swivel watching for rollers, wind chop etc. This is why I have a much bigger boat for the sound. Just a word of caution, if you do take this out on the sound or any big water lake please wear a life vest.
