Lake Scanewa springers?

Post by 4n6fisher » Thu May 28, 2015 8:08 am

I am heading out to lake Scanewa Saturday and Sunday to chase around some of those springers they transport up from barrier dam. I will be trolling around in my pontoon boat and may try from the shore, maybe around either the Cowlitz river or Cispus mouths. Does anyone have any tips for that lake?

I searched around and only found one report from Salmonbarry chasing Coho a couple years back.

Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Omar

I've always wanted to try this one, but never had good intel and don't like a skunk so I do the river instead. If anyone has anything to say, that would be great.

Does anyone know if these fish head up the Cowlitz or Cispus?

Nate do you ever fish the upper Cowlitz or Cispus?

Thanks, I will let you know if I find anything that works.

Cispus is Terrible , don't worry about fishing that one! The drive up isn't worth the gas, river blows them out before they hit the water. Upper Cowlitz is great fishing all day go and relax have a great time. Lake Scanewa is hit or miss, go to the upper lake where the river flows in and you can catch a few spawners when there release numbers are high, other than that its tough fishing. For the springers most troll plugs 50 feet off shore but you have to get there when they dump and you wont be alone.

All the cispus fish fall back to the lake. Unless you're there on a dump day, you're not gonna catch anything. I haven't gone way upstream to look for 'em, but I doubt they're going up. I'm pretty sure it's a wasted effort.

That being said, I've had some fantastic days on the Cispus when they've dumped. IT's accessible pretty much from Yellowjacket to the lake. Bring your whitewater kayak and have some fun. But more often than not it'll be empty.

Missed the dump by a couple days, looked around to see if I could find the info on when they dump but did not find any. It does seem, based upon Lake Trolls report and talking with the guide, that the dump day or the next are good then it slows down. There was lots of fish surfacing, just none biting. Needed more than one day to explore further. Ended up camping at Riffe lake, but I think the Falls campground would be nice, I could not find online links that still worked so we went with a known reservation. The boat ramp there is trashed but the river would be a nice mellow float down to the lake with some structure for fish to hang out in.
