So, I was on my bike, as in the 21speed model. Headed down to the market with backpack strapped on and rain in the forecast. Did the grocery thing, which is usually restricted to what "fits" or "Fills" the backpack, whichever comes first.
Today's destination took me near Bitter Lake. After leaving the store, and I was mulling over my various routes to take home. I selected a trip around Bitter lake for a sniff test. As many have heard, through our local news. It has been reported that during construction of a building, some years ago, very near Bitter Lake. The sewer line for that knew construction was accidentally connected to the storm drain. Which, normally drains, only roadway rain water into the lake.
After seeing that news story I was expecting many signs warning of water contamination, fish contamination, swimming restrictions and such. I did not see a sign specifically addressing, sewage in the water or its possible health concerns. Nor did I smell any foul odors!. In fact there was a fishermen casting from the shoreline, at the city park. The park, being the best place to "sniff", and look for visual cues, that is where I started my investigation.
I asked the fisher dude how his luck was and if he ever, "ate" his catch. The word merely struck laughter, as he volunteered that there had been sewage flowing in the lake for who knows how long, and his version of the story. Which, was that a residence had a sump pump type sewage overflow system. That when it kicked on, do to a high water issue, is when sewage flowed into the lake.
Not wanting to dispute his version. I continued looking for any floating, visual clues (floating logs), in various shapes or colors (white toilet paper), that likely would bob on the lakes wind blown surface. With no visual or olfactory evidence to indicate the lake has as much raw sewage in it. As 8 years of flushing could create, as reported by one of many exaggerated news stories.
I moved on, with a recent headache. I had noticed shortly after inhaling a cloud of dust, coming from the back of the grocery store. I had shopped in, just minutes before. Apparently, after bringing to the attention of one grocery clerk, that a thick, white, fog like plume was entering the store from the stocking area, in the back room. Which, coincidentally was on the Bitter Lake side of the grocery. I thought this could be the evidence I had been "sniffing" for.
People were choking back there, including myself! She replied that the smell was propane exhaust from the forklift, and that often people complain of it. Knowing full well what 'that" gas smelled like. I informed her "that ain't no propane exhaust I am smelling". Could it be the perfume of Bitter Lake? It is either coming from Bitter Lake, or something is wrong in the back of the store. By now several people are choking and covering there nose and mouth with there shirt. With that I am anticipating a discovery of the foul kind over at Bitter Lake. One store worker comes running from the back of the store, to alert another employee. That a fire extinguisher had fallen to the floor, and the valve had broken off!!
Damn, I thought it was the dreaded Bitter Lake, passing gas or belching it. As it did it's annual, warm to cold water "turn over" for the year!!
If your thinking Bitter Lake is a turd farm, your sadly mistaken. In fact, there is a recent plant of trout, destined for Bitter Lake. The freshly stocked trout, may have better luck finding floaters on the surface or gut bombs on lake bottom, than I. And likely, will be mistaken for the pellets they are accustomed too!
A fishing tip: "Super size" the offering. To match the size of the hatch! Use a cigar shape of rolled power bait with corn or peanut chunks molded in. May take 2 or 3 jars to accomplish one bait. For catch and release, I got nuthin, use your imagination and keep it legal.
