89 trout challenge - Saturday, 12/13/14 (Revised)

Post by whorde » Tue Nov 25, 2014 11:23 am

Saturday, December 13, 2014.

Is it a silly numerical thing of no meaning? Sure. But it is a silly numerical thing of no meaning that wont come around again for nearly another century. The chances of any one of us being alive on January 2, 2103 is essentially zero.

Any excuse for a party, right?

In honor of the 89 years that will pass before the next such date, I am proposing the 89 fish challenge.

Location will be Greenlake. (EDIT: It occurred to me that the location doesn't matter. Pick your favorite steelhead stocked lake next to your house.) Greenlake is centrally located, and honestly, even with the fishing pressure, there are probably still 40,000+ incredibly stupid fish in there which will hit just about anything. Obviously you can't use bait, as that limits you to 10. Fish from shore, a raft, a helicopter, it really doesn't matter. The rule would be that you bring pen and paper, and your cell phone (or a watch), and you log the time you catch each fish, as well as what type of fish. That's it. Then, either when you get tired, or hit 89 and quit, or it becomes midnight, and you post a report with a picture of your log.

There will be no prizes for this contest, other than the esteem of your peers if you either win, or if you dont win and either catch an absurd number of fish or something really interesting. Bonus prizes of the esteem of your peers will be handed out to anyone who catches a non-fall-stocker. Super bonus prizes to anyone who catches a brown, or honestly, anything other than a rainbow. Yes, I will award you bonus prizes for that rock bass. Pics will, of course, be necessary to get such recognition, so you may have to cut and paste a few together if you are limited to 2 pics per report.

If you think this sounds fun, post here that you'll take up the challenge. As if there isn't a decent level of interest, I wont be catching stockers in Greenlake. I'll be out in the woods somewhere.

I would hesitate calling it a "Tournament". WDFW frowns on rogue Tournaments prizes or no prizes. WaLakes found this out 1st hand about 5 years ago...

At Green lake, I might be more likely to tap at about 5 or 10. [wink]

I would tap out in traffic trying to get to green lake.. I think I would instead head north east and catch a limit of wild trout lol.

Sounds like a cool contest, I like the idea and concept.
I feel a more realist thing to do is try for 89 reports on WL.com for 12/13/14. Or maybe Mike can throw some gear peoples way for reports 12, 13 and 14 on that day.
We need to figure out a way around running another Multi-Species Event. Or any contest. I still have ideas like this that would blow up. I looked back on that Freshwater Multi-Species Contest we had and that was a lot of fun and got a huge response.

I hear you Jonb, with the rivers in this sad condition I was actually was thinking about where I could go get some trout on the other side.

I'm going to have to work with JonB on his driving phobias. There is no traffic getting to Greenlake at dawn on a Saturday.

There most certainly will be traffic going to green lake on Saturday morning.. I'm originally from a town with 2k population.. 2 street lights in the whole town. More cows per populous than people, so I'm not a fan of the city. . Living in Everett is as much as I can take, and even that is rough, let alone driving into Seattle.. not a fan. If I'm already in Seattle for an errand I'm forced to run, maybe under those circumstances I'll hit green lake. Nothing wrong with the lake or the people who fish it, I just don't like the traffic, or dealing with the crowds. My proper place is in the woods on a dirt rd. With solitude.
