Northwest Fishing Reports

Thinking of hitting it up tomorrow seeing that the Puke is closed for netting. Its been a couple of years and having trouble finding the spots I went to in the past on satellite.

One of the spots I remember going to with friends was up high near Voight hatchery. We parked somewhere in downtown Orting and walked down a long trail (1/2 mile to a 1 mile and when we got to the spot we had to weigh out into chest high water to cross to an island if I remember correctly and then cast onto a narrow part of the river that held very big kings. This was in like 2004 or 2005. Anyone remember this spot?

The regs say from the mouth of the Carbon up to Voight creek so I'm guessing you can't fish below the 162 bridge where the Puke and Carbon meet, is this correct?

If you have not been since 2004 or 05 be aware that Orting has decided to make some money off of us. Virtually all parking that accesses the river requires an Orting parking pass. The signs tell you where to get the pass. The sporting goods store in town use to be one place. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Is it possible to park further away from the river, like at a park or on a far-away street and then bicyle to the river? In other words, are there places further away that don't require a parking pass? (I may end up borrowing my son's razor scooter)

Actually yes you can park at the foothills trailhead right next to the 162 bridge and Bike into town from there if you can find a spot, it will be busy today !
And yes you can fish below the 162 bridge where the rivers meet. the closure is for the lower river

Thanks for the info. I ended up fishing near the 128th st bridge. Be aware guys that one of the neighbors told me a guy on a bicycle has broken into a number of cars there.

As for the fishing I stayed down low to avoid the crowds but got skunked. Any info on how much they are charging for a parking pass?

Yes you pretty much park at your own risk there. Call BigJ's sports in Orting that's where you get the pass and you can sign up for the fishin derby if they have it again this year.

Are you aware that this is the Puyallup and not the Carbon?

I know that. I avoided the Carbon because of the crowds

I was hoping so. Some people think that part is the Carbon and don't fish there until the Carbon opens. Of course anything going to the Carbon swims by there first.

I was on the Carbon yesterday afternoon around 3 I was done fishing by the waterfall. I didn't have waders so I walked out in my jean not that bad. anyways I saw a few people snag more then actually catch the fish. but when I left around 4pm I was walking down a trail along the river and I saw another guy carrying a very large fish I asked him about it he said it's a king looked about 3 ft long but it also looked like he was out there all day he looked tired.
