Skagit and Sauk Steelhead

Looks like a limited C&R fishery is going to be getting underway for wild steelhead on the Skagit and Sauk. Anyone care to offer some location tips for a bank bound angler on the Sauk? I have fished the Sauk many times, but not in the area that will be open (downstream of the Sauk Prairie Rd. Bridge...

Re: Proposed Rules: Snohomish, Skykomish, Wallace

I might as well go ahead and post the link to where all of this information is stored by WDFW. http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/regulations/rule_proposals/ If you follow the link and click on "Comment on Policy Proposals" you can read through some sort of generic updates that the WDFW proposed a couple mo...

Re: Proposed Rules: Snohomish, Skykomish, Wallace

Yea, I figured that one possibility could be that it was just updated to reflect this year, however, I do know that the rules I linked to are not temporary "emergency" style proposals. This is what the WDFW is actually proposing going forward with under their three year rule simplification plan, and...

Proposed Rules: Snohomish, Skykomish, Wallace

Before I begin, let me place a caveat. If this topic is already being discussed elsewhere please point me to the thread and I will happily abandon this one. That being said, has anyone looked through the recently proposed updates to the Puget Sound freshwater rules on the Snohomish, Sky and Wallace?...

Re: What/where can I fish right now?

Well, given where you are located, you could always consider taking trout gear (spinning or fly) out to the salt and looking for sea run Cutthroat. The Skookumchuck should be getting going for Steelhead right about now also.

Re: Wynoochee River Steelhead

Just pick a spot and try. If someone does give you a spot, the likelyhood will be that it is a combat infested inferior hole, the type of hole that should be avoided at all cost. The best bet is to look on google maps and find the gnarliest most sloggiest **** show of a bushwhack you can find and f...

Re: What's the best technique this time of year for steelhea

I bet that you could find dedicated anglers that would tell you any one of those things would be their "go-to" right now, but I am personally fond of egg/corky combinations and pink worms. Don't forget hardware though as well (spoons/spinners). When I am out after winter steelhead I like to employ n...

Re: I have a Bobber Doggin question?

I've never actually dogged beads before, but I dog corkies with eggs for winter steelhead and I have always done fine with leaders in the 2' range, even in relatively clear water. Other opinions may differ, but when drifting (or dogging, which is sort of related) I like to keep leaders as short as I...

Re: Skykomish and wallace closures

The Wallace has three trestles over it below the hatchery. I'm assuming that this means the one that is right next to the HWY 2 bridge, but does anyone know for certain?

Re: Late(er) Season High Lakes

Thanks for the reply.i have gotten out to a couple sub-alpine/alpine lakes recently; Royal Lake on the OP at the end of September and Wallace Lake just last weekend. Both times I had good success using a 1/8oz gold and crimson kastmaster. In general, I was able to answer my question that lakes such ...

Late(er) Season High Lakes

Hey everyone, question here on late season high lakes. By late season, I mean September and October, and by high I mean in the vicinity of 2000' to 3000' elevation. In general, with the salmon closures everywhere this year I am going to be doing some late season hike in days to higher elevation lake...

Re: What should we do now?

I like the idea of trying to form an argument based upon data. As long as it is gathered correctly, you cannot argue with numbers (although people will try, which is why your numbers need to be bullet proof). If you came out with a figure, for instance, showing that 25% of the catch in a gill net is...

Re: Getting nervous!

So... My question is, if you have no legal reason to beach fish for salmon, are we legit to call SRC our bycatch? (I'm not calling you out at all, Ian, I am a little confused on this myself. The whole fly community onviously targets SRC, but I always saw it as a gray area--calling it bycatch. The w...

Re: Getting nervous!

I keep checking the emergency rule sections and can't find a body of water mentioned in the release, Lk WA, Lk Sammamish, Sky, Skagit with a closure listed? Just an oversight or delay by wdfw? I thought that made it official. Go check out the WDFW page now, everything is specifically listed out. I ...

I'm in the same boat Ian. I have a lot of deep backcountry water I want to hit this summer that may not happen now.

Thanks for all the advice. I ended up buying a another reel, that way I can take the appropriate time to try to fix my older one without missing out on the beginning of the season.

I actually forgot to include that....it is a spinning reel.
