So it was 6pm, and the wife had a full day and decided to lay down for a nap. I thought to myself, "Self! She's going to be asleep for at LEAST 2 hours! Go get your rod!" Not one to argue, I grabbed my trout rod, a few lures, and went up to the lake. I had a plan today. I was going to fish the North end of the lake in the small cove that's just East of the Playhouse. I threw a small Panther Martin spinner from the shore in various spots, and on my 3rd cast, whamo! 0.5lb rainbow. It's so fun to watch them jump like that! I released him unhurt.
Then I wandered a bit and had no luck for several more casts. My father called from long distance to my cell, so we chatted a bit as the sun slipped lower and lower to the west. I had a hard time concentrating on the conversation as I was standing there at the lakes edge watching rise after rise, many within casting distance. But, I love my father and I didn't want to put him off by telling him I had to stop talking so I could catch a fish. Well, the call lasted about 20 minutes, and when it was over, the sun had quietly snuck over the horizon to leave only that soft evening glow of twilight I love so much. I hung up, walked to a new spot, and on my second cast the Lord smiled on me by tempting a hefty 2lb trout to attack my little lure with a ferocity I've not seen in a long time. Oh sweet times! That portly little rainbow did such a dance on the surface of the water, my heart could barely keep up!
Well, I landed the fella, gently removed the barbless hook, and set him off to keep on swimming. Let's see, it's 8pm now, and I'll bet the wife is awake from her nap. I think I'll go give her a kiss!
I sure love this time of year.
