I gave this lake a 4 for its lack of a crowd on opening day. I like the little resort and the potential for big bass. However on this windy day with low pressure moving in, the fish weren't cooperating. I did get an interesting reminder to watch where you step if you get off the boat for a nature call. While anchored near shore to escape the wind, I heard rustling in the reeds next to the boat and was surprised to see a LARGE rattlesnake on the hunt. It was about 4+ feet long and had about 8 or 9 rattles on its tail. Needless to say, I was glad to be in the boat with 3 feet of water between us! Of course as Murphy would have predicted, a brief search for our camera ended with the realization that it was still at home on the counter where it wouldn't be forgotten. :-) After pointing the snake out to my wife and daughter, I wanted to see if I could get it to rattle for them so I reached out with my fishing pole and tapped it on the head. It seemed confused by a cold object harassing it, drew back in strike mode once, and then disappeared behind a large rock never to be seen again. So watch your step in the scablands, you may get the surprise of your life!
