Seattle schoolkids had a day off so I took one too and hauled my 9 and 12 yr olds out to Burke for some rainbows. Fishing was SLOW compared to the many times we've fished here in the past. We did get some fish, but great patience was required, as we had 2 rods in the water but still only managed 1 fish per hour between us. We threw various flavors of powerbait with worms and eggs. Plain rainbow powerbait seemed to work the best. I'd advise experimenting with your leader lengths; we caught nothing on 24 inch leaders but when we lengthened them to 32-36" we started catching fish.
We were prepared for the fish to be 8-10" plants that we'd heard about, but surprisingly, almost all of ours were legitimate 11.5-13.5 inchers. (We measured them!)
Overall, a very nice outing, not too crowded, mixed (but not uncomfortable) weather,
Western Meadowlarks singing all over the place, and too early for rattlers. Also had the game wardens stop by, nice to see some enforcement here.
