Despite the news of the 1998 fish kill, I had to give Lake Lenore a try in the hopes of tangling with a few of the Lahontan Cutthroat there that survived. Last year I managed to find a few in the early spring, but I was not able to repeat that feat today.
The lake was about one to two feet lower than it has been in recent years at this time. I also found that the water was stained brown, but that there were not a lot of weeds. The weather was okay, with variable winds, apx 45 degrees, and partly sunny skies.
The crowds, definitely down. I only saw six fishermen spread out along the length of the lake, and only one other one in the north end where my wife and I were fishing. In over an hour we managed no luck throwing spoons around and the fly fisherman nearby had not better success.
Lets hope that it gets a little better in the spring or that the planted fingerlings come into the fishery as catchable by next spring. Despite all of that, it was still a fine day to be out of the house and on the water!
