My son Julian made his first camping visit to Chopaka with me this June(17-21). I must say that to be outfished by a twelve year old doesn't help one's ego. The weather was warm Thurs-Sat. while Sat-Mon. was very slightly showery. But what was wonderful was that there was virtually no wind the whole time! While the mayflies came off every afternoon, we had our best luck stripping back slowly beanbag damsel nymphs on float line. Olive green wiyh relatively long tails. I believe that amber would have been a better color but I didn't have that in my materials. There was some dry fly action as well, but not as consistent as with the above.
The campground was crowded the whole time and it took a day before we were able to move our tent to a level space. I wish that DNR would develop more campsites. We all know that pressure is increasing on the lake. It's big enough so that you can get away from people if you want. But by not increasing the # of sites there is going to be signifcant damage to area around the campsites as people just spread all over.
I also caught a 2lb bass. It actually tasted pretty good . Others were caught while I was there. Kill them all. A moose strolled out into the south end while we were fishing about 60 feet away. Awesome fellow.
The trout seem to be relatively large (3-5lbs on ave.) Julian had a 6-7lber on an egg sucking leech one evening that must have jumped 4-5 feet. Very spunky fish.
