There is ice fishing to be done in the Basin. Went to Alkali on the
last day of 2000 with some luck. The whole lake is iced over and has
been for quite some time. The ice was 8-10 inches right off the
highway where I tried it. Walked out about 40 yards and drilled some
holes. I jigged a swedish pimple for awhile with no takers then
switched to just a white 1/16 ounce crappie jig, it wasn't long before
the first bite. Landed a nice 14" rainbow in about the 1lb range. Had
one more fish on for a few seconds about 20 minutes later, looked to
be about the same size. Then the weather got worse with snow and rain
and the fish seemed to quit biting and so did I.
Going to try again on 1/6/00. The weather is going to be in the upper
30's here for awhile so be sure to check the ice thickness before going
out too far. I like at least 4 inches to be safe.
Good luck,
Jim
