Drove over for the day with my 2 girls, age 4 and 6. The weather was sunny and warm in the upper 60's when we arrived about 4pm. I've fished this lake on the April and Oct. opener for many years, but decided against it this year because of how small the fish were in Oct. (5-6 inches) I saw the opening weekend reports of 11 inch yearlings, so I was a bit skeptical.
There are many bank fishing spots on this lake, so there is really no need for a boat. We found a good spot and I cast out my marshmallow and worm. Before I had a chance to rig up my daughters rods I had my first fish a nice fat 12 incher. Hmmm, Out my line goes and back to the other rods. 30 seconds later, bang another fish!...This one about 11 inches. Well, guess the reports were right! The girls finally got into the water and my oldest Sarah caught her first fish in about 5 min. It was fairly calm when we started, but the wind picked up and started to blow. Jameson can be very windy at times and it's very rare you go the day without some wind, so be prepared for that. It blew for about half an hour and then calmed down again. I was up to 4 fish and Sarah had 3. Jessica my 4 yr. old had yet to get a fish and was starting to get upset. I kept telling her to be patient and hang in there....yeah right!...she set her rod down and was playing with a bug or something and!
then bam her rod almost shot into the water. Note to self...always set the drag! Luckily I was close enough to grab it and save one more lost rod. I could tell it was a big one, so handed it to her and she started to crank away. After a 10 min. battle I netted a nice fat 16 inch carry-over. She was so excited!
The clouds started rolling in and the wind picked up again. We quit about 7:30pm with a limit for myself, 3 for Sarah and 2 for Jessica. We used marshmallow and worm and what Sarah calls the Triple Whammy. Marshmallow, chunk of worm and then rainbow power bait. All in all a great quick trip over the mtns for some nice fat fish.
