Took a buddy from work out to Potholes. Dan was up from NC and had never been walleye fishing. We started off jigging some humps. He caught a 3lb largemouth on a pink/yellow hair jig on his first cast. That was the only fish we caught all day on a jig. I caught a 2lb smallie on a casting spoon. We started trolling smile blades shortly after. The most productive time was between 0830 and 0930. We had a 100 yard stretch on the edge of the sand dunes where we caught most of our eyes. A green smile blade with a green/chartreuse float was the most productive. Pink and gold blades also produced. We caught 30 + eyes, 3 bass and only 1 bullhead. No perch or bluegills. We could have had a 16 fish double limit of 15 to 20 inch eyes by 0930 but Dan couldn't take any with him and I only wanted 5 for a meal. I cleaned 5 nice eaters.

Thx Mark. Two weeks ago we were there and the bass fishing was a little slow so I used your previous report as guide to target walleye. Imagine that… we got on em pretty quick. Thanks ??

I was just able to find a point that continues to hold fish. The algae bloom clouding the water definitely helps keep the eyes shallow.

Great to take someone fishing who has never caught that species.

As we know, walleye fishing can be a steep learning curve. It is satisfying to take someone new to walleye fishing out and give them the opportunity to be successful. I meet a lot of people who aren't successful because they only go out once in a while. It can be really frustrating to learn a new lake or area. I have a tendency to go to the same places because I know them. I do try new techniques though, at least to me. Jigging raps and casting spoons are something I knew about for a long time but never wanted to try something new when what I was already doing was working great. Because most of the time I don't care if I take any fillets home, makes me a great fishing partner, I feel free to try other techniques. I don't just "meat" fish and fret if my livewell isn't full. Recently I have been using hair jigs which have been around forever. I caught 3 eyes over 8lbs this summer on them by ripping them through weeds. The thinner profile gets hung up less and the results speak for themselves. It would have been nice to have someone teach me about walleye fishing but there is a certain satisfaction to figuring it out, at least most of the time. YouTube is a great tool for anyone who is new to walleye fishing. Tom Boley has some great videos that anyone can learn from.

BAZZ I did not troll crankbaits at all. From the couple of guys I talked to who were trolling it was pretty slow. The depths we have been fishing at have been almost too shallow for crankbaits.

Nothing like hearing the clicker go off on your linecounter in the dark dragging cranks around at night. Something so magical about contour trolling in the dark. I highly recommend it. Good way to autochart map out a spot while fishing a lure as well. So many techniques so little time. The experiment must continue
