Launching out of Point Defiance just after 9am we started fishing right away at the slag pile. My son noticed my rod, saying you got a bite, soon after deploying my gear. It had pulled out of the clip but no fish was there. Next my son pulled in a hatchery Chinook shaker. After some time, he had a bite that I saw and got really excited about. But it didn’t even pull the line out of the clip, and no shaker at the end either.

Around 11:30 I get a bite that pulls the line out of clip. I grab my rod. I was probably screaming I got something. I have to admit I was excited. My expectations of the outing were not high. I have never fished for Coho in Puget Sound from a boat before. Let alone from my own boat. I do not have a good catch rate for salmon from Ol’Girl. I expected to pull in a shark (dogfish). Bo got the net and scooped it up. But he didn’t know how to tell what kind of salmon it was and for me, the best way is by the mouth. So, I had him bring it in and it was a Coho. I was so excited! First salmon for me in my boat. We tried to get more bites but it didn’t happen.

As we came toward the boathouse area there were a lot of sail boats with sails down. I heard a horn, then all the sails started to go up. We decided to go to the store/restroom and then go squidding.

We tried to find some squid and lowered our jigs down but the current kept taking them away. We added more weight but it didn’t seem to help much. We decided to call it good and put away the gear to head home around 2.

The week before I had picked Randy Castello (rseas) mind because I had planned on going out but during the night, I got sick and didn’t go. I applied what he told me with what I had in my possession for the outing. The only bait I had was squid so we were using little pieces of that.
