After a bit of a lull in fishing trips (for a good reason, new grandpa time!) I got the boat out with NWFR writer Hanna Pennebaker and her friend Michael. We launched at 7am at the Edmonds sling. I was amazed to see only four boats in line? Anyway, after hearing from rseas we ran south and fished the oil docks for two hours, getting one bite for our efforts. The wind and chop was just enough to be annoying so we ran north. Thinking I’d get us into pinks at Shipwreck when we got close to Possession Bar the wind was pretty calm, as was the water so we decided to fish the east side of the bar from the green can to the horseshoe. It turned out to be a good call as there are a lot of fish out there! Plenty of pinks, but even more of a pleasant surprise was some good coho action, including a beautiful ten pound hooknose that turned out to be wild.

We ended the day releasing four wild coho, keeping one clipped coho, and three nice pinks. The final of the day was a double chasing a meter mark of fish down to 75 feet, but most fish we got at 45-55 feet of cable out. Troll speed just around 3 mph, flashers and hoochies with a herring strip. The last hour we switched to a white dodger and red hoochie which did equally well for coho and pinks. Steady action so we never did get over the Shipwreck.

This could be a pretty good coho year!

Congratulations grandpa, it was good seeing the white TJ out there. The biomass of pinks is incredible, they are everywhere right now.
