Launched out of Porcupine Bay and fished the same areas with my buddy Ron as last weekend. A slow start but we caught a few dinks in deep water near buoy 1. Once we got the skunk off, I searched for bigger eyes on shallow flats near current. After a bit of searching we found a school of 16 to 21 inch eyes. A bright red jig head with a Mardi Gras 3 inch grub produced best. We caught about 25 or so total and kept 14 quality eaters.

Yah, those there look like the real thing for sure. Thanks for the info.

Nice haul of quality white meat Mark! You are both persistent and consistent. That Mardi Gras color has been a good one for me as well. One of my go-to's is one I make that's similar to a watermelon with orange fleck.
Tight lines!

JEDI,
I usually don't use that color but one of my buddies really likes it in both spring and fall. What had been working for me the last couple of times stopped so I changed up what I was using and it worked. I have been averaging stopping at 5-8 different locations in search of active fish. That's my best advice for anybody who is struggling right now; that and get your jig on. These walleyes can be reluctant to chase down a spinner in this cold water so finding an area and slowly working it with a jig, blade bait or drop shot should be on everyone's list of things to try. It does take awhile to get your arms in jigging shape without feeling like you have little T-rex arms at the end of the day. When I do start trolling it will probably be with crankbaits.

Mark, Appreciate all the fine details. That's how I totally concur with your approach-A lot of hunting and pecking covering a lot of water to find some concentrations of fish. And finesse jigging is my favorite, especially for the jumbo fish in the shallower water. And like you later I would also be trolling cranks, likely 3 way rigging. Have also been finding over the years in my experience that the eyes really seem to like some blue fleck so have been adding some in to my lures. Have a good one. Tight Lines.
