Drove over to Mason's Resort on Monday. Had the boat ready to roll Tuesday morning. We headed due north out of Clallam Bay and focused on 400 to 600 feet of water.
We fished several 2.8" OG2s: fluoro-green/chartreuse, white/black-scales, and fluoro-green/fluoro-orange. (On our previous trip 3 weeks ago, the fluoro-green/chartreuse was the top lure. This outing, the fluoro-green/fluoro-orange out-fished it!)
During the early-morning hours, we fished in the upper 30 feet of water. As the morning progressed, we kept one downrigger cable shallow and then progressively moved the other deeper--picking up fish from 70 to 90 feet down.
We fished the OG2s behind a 10" Big Al's fish flash. And, we applied Smelly Jelly Pro Guide Herring scent to the lures before we put them behind the boat.
Since there were three of us fishing, we also fished an OG2 behind a third rod that was pulling a dipsy diver. I'd estimate that the diver was down in the 15 foot range. Interesting enough, this rod in the shallow water was productive through the entire day.
With three of us in the boat, we ended up one fish shy of our limits (5 clipped fish). And, there was good size to these ocean-run fish. We weighed our largest at the dock (after bleeding it) and it weighed 10lb 8 ounces.
The only downside to this outing was the number of unclipped fish that we released. We tried to keep a tally through the day and it was in excess of five unclipped to each clipped fish. (Talking to other fishermen on our return, they were seeing similar.)
