We fished out of Masons Resort last Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for the kings. We were running the OG2s--primarily the 2.8" fluoro-green/fluoro-orange and a new 3.9" in purple/black-scales. (The new purple/black-scales was a request from a friend, Dave C., who fishes purple flies in the Clearwater for steelhead and salmon.)
I was joined on Tuesday by our master rigger, Jed W., who tackled everything from video capture and creation to keeping the rods rigged and in the water while I drove the boat. A day later, we were joined by my brother and his son.
We ran the lures with the leader-length out of the box. And, we fished them behind a 10" Big Al's Fish Flash in green/chrome. The kings seemed to be following the shore line. And, our hookups came in 100 feet of water. The first with 70 feet of cable on the wire and the second with over 90 feet of cable on the wire.
In terms of trolling speed, we tried to maintain a 45 degree angle in our downrigger cables.
Tuesday morning was on fire! We lost count of the shakers and released a couple of under-size fish. In addition, we released a really nice wild fish that was in the high teens. But, within 5 minutes of putting our lines in the water, we had our first keeper king on the 2.8" fluoro-green/fluoro-orange. And, a couple of hours later, we picked up a 30lb king on the new purple/black-scales.
Below is a video with highlights of the trip!
