Headed to Jefferson Point and looked around for fish. Marked several between 50-80 feet, with the occasional fish around 20-30. One fish passed directly underneath the boat Trolled southeast between president point and point jefferson between 80 and 100 feet of water. After an hour or so of marking lots of fish but picking up nothing we pulled in our lines. Starboard downrigger had nothing but the portside ended up having a little shaker Chinook on it! In the future when trolling for resident salmon I think I will use my Shimano Scimitars that I generally pier fish with as I think my gear was just absolute overkill. (40lb mainline on a medium action rod. Pretty sure I could pull in a small Halibut!) Marked several for the rest of the day but no bites. Used a racing green flasher with two green hoochies, and a green/black crocodile spoon with a purple haze flasher (This is the one that pulled in the fish). No herring or scent used. A boat near us pulled in a couple. A ~32ft Canadian flagged vessel absolutely pummeled us with wake just before we left.

Despite having a tradition of going on charters in Vancouver island annually, I would say that I am a fishing novice in the sense of doing things myself. I would greatly appreciate advice on picking locations and gear when fishing! Was the combo I set up today a good choice? Would you have done anything differently?

When using downriggers, I typically use whatever line will hold and release from the clip when I want. Sometimes it’s not perfect for the fish size.

I use my kokanee gear when targeting reident coho in area 10. It's a blast. Except when they don't bite, like on Sunday when we were out. Ha.

I sent you a PM. Also, I would agree that you should use your Scimitar.
