We started early, on the water by 8am. The Lincoln launch was snow covered but offered good traction. We headed to Hawk creek to let the ground fog subside and marked nothing. I decided to make the run to Whitestone and was happy to have our little buddy heater in the 35 degree wind. We picked up a really nice wild fish who posed long enough for a picture. We prospected and fished from Whitestone, Sterling Pt, Goat farm and back to 7 Bays and caught just 1 keeper. Sure was glad I had good company, decent weather, and an extra canister of propane. It was good to be out.

Can anyone confirm that our hatchery, disappointed with Kokanee results, is switching to other species?

That is what I was told by the tribe. Last year they planted steril steelhead and are planing to add steril kamaloops to the list.

Since they don’t seem to be clipping any species but triploids, I better get my fish identification skills up graded. Not much difference In a wild rainbow versus an unclipped steel head but the configuration of the tail, right?
Thanks for the reply Captain Dave

Fished the same area Sat/Sun and caught a few like one in your pic. Soon as I see the extra adipose I don't even take them out of the net anymore. :-/

They should be fin clipped just like the triploids and want to say they will be a hybrid rainbow/steelhead (what I was told last year).

Really??? You guys shouldn’t even own a boat if you don’t know the difference between a steelhead and rainbow!! I guess all the Kokanee we are catching are sockeye!!

I thought steelhead and rainbows were genetically the same fish. I was reading a hatchery report (for lyons ferry I think) and it said the 10-20% of steelhead that didn't migrate just became resident trout and were genetically the same as the rest of the rainbows, and that some resident rainbow fry will go to sea. I read somewhere they are seeing this naturally play out in the at the Ho river now. Practically for us I think it's just 20" for the rule book.

Good company, decent weather and a Mr. Buddy, it's all good.

Need to correct my previous comment, it was the Kamloops I heard was to be a hybrid, not steelhead. That said the hatchery fish should be clipped, otherwise, how else would you be able to ID a native rainbow from a steelhead?
