After several miserable August outings it was finally nice getting back into catching mode. We decided to target crappie at Potholes after hearing about recent success by friends. Al and I had not fished for crappie in years so it was truly going to be an experiment today. We brought along CF who had success finding fish last year at Potholes.
We launched at Mardon and headed to the face of the dunes and pulled size 4,5 and 7 Flickershads up into Crab Creek picking up a bass, walleye, catfish, perch and finally a crappie. After an hour we switched over to 1//8 and 1/4 crappie jigs and game was on. Over the next 6 hours we landed and released over 50 crappie most 10-13 inches. Largest was a 15” slab. We trolled the jigs in 10-15 FOW at 0.8-1.2 mph. Yellow and chartreuse colors worked best.
The last 2 hours we added a single bottom walker with a slow death rig and picked up 6 decent walleyes with the largest 23”. We added a bluegill to the variety near the end.
It was another great day on the water with great friends!
