My wife JoAnn, and our dog Diesel spent a pleasant day touring Whidbey Island. In the morning we went to a farmers market, then to Greenbank Farm for lunch and some shopping. The afternoon high tide was at 2pm so after lunch we headed over to Bush Point to do some shore fishing for pinks.

I had never been to Bush Point so wasn't quite sure what to expect. First off, there was a pretty good crowd of anglers lining the beach but not so much that I couldn't find a spot to join them. Everyone was friendly enough. I saw fish being packed out but for the first hour didn't see anything caught or fish jumping.

My fishing started off on the wrong foot as I discovered my rod tip had broke during the drive over, bummer. I was still able to cast and fish though.

JoAnn had set up her chair and blanket and she and Diesel were people watching so I went back to them, next to the boat ramp. The tide had started to turn and move so after a short break I went back out and cast my p-line pink jig as far as I could heave it. Within moments after hitting the water my rod doubled over and I brought in my first ever shore-caught pink, a chrome bright fish. After losing my jig I tied on another, smaller p-line jig and bamm, fish number two, a bigger male with hump start to form. I would have released this one because of the hump but he was bleeding badly so fish number two went in the cooler and we were done for the day.

Bush Point sticks way out into Area 9 and is a nice ambush area for these pinks. They should be streaming by for another week or so. If you're looking for a relaxing trip to do the ferry ride is easy and the island has some nice shops and things to do in between fishing. We had a fun a relaxing day!

Sounds like you had a lot of fun catching a limit from the beach. Just curious, why would you release a Pink with a hump? Good report.

It's meat quality hits a lower grade of flavor and tastes more fishy. Once the Hump forms or the olive back the table fair quality goes down because of it. Love eating pink salmon only as sea-bright and the steaks are easier to serve with the skin on. Cheers on first shore pink, enjoyable milestone of many anglers in PS.

Don't be afraid of the ones where the hump has started to form. We've kept several of them this year and they have tasted great with very flaky meat.
