My son Matthew is visiting from Montana so we decided to get in some salmon fishing for this weekend. Coming along was my wife, JoAnn.

As to the location we fished… I need to give a big shout out to rseas who suggested an Area 10 location not Jefferson Head to target chinook. He also gave me some tackle suggestions that turned out to be effective (why wouldn’t they, it’s rseas after all!). Anyway, because he gave me this lesser known and talked about location, I’m going to just say it’s on the west side of Area 10 and it’s not Jeff Head.

We launched from Edmonds sling and made the run down to our fishing grounds. On arriving there the heavens opened up and graced us with several hours of steady rain. But it was calm and flat as glass, and not cold so we weren't complaining. Low tide was at 8am. We worked north of the point (there’s a hint…) on the outgoing tide and south of the point on the incoming.

About 7:30, trolling at 2.7mph in 120 feet of water the starboard rod starts jerking violently after I re-established bottom with the DR ball. The fish has released and it feels solid. I hand the rod to Matt and he begins a nice battle with a chinook. The fish takes several strong runs, peeling off line. Matt does a great job and brings it back to the boat, when after several lunges and runs I slide the net under and bring on board a beautiful 29” clipped chinook, sweet! I didn’t weigh the fish, would guess 10ish pounds? In any case, it’s Matt’s first ever chinook so Thank You rseas for helping to make that happen! Gear was a red-stripped 11” flasher and a 3.5 inch green-glow-black spoon with garlic scent.

We took care of the fish and trolled the south end of the point, managing to catch a couple shakers but no more keepers. Since the sun came out and it was a beautiful day we decided to call it a day. Who wants to fish in sunny, calm weather, right? We had plans and will be back out tomorrow to try to get Matt some more fresh salmon to take back to Montana!

Mike, congratulations and the skipper always gets the credit. I just provided some suggestions. The area you were fishing is one of my favorite in sound drags this time of the year. Good luck out there today.
