Caught and released a hatchery chinook while bass fishing out of Wawawai. Big surprise especially since spring chinook is closed due to low numbers. Was careful not to lift the fish out of the water. So at the first spot fished in the afternoon decided to try to see if there were any bigger fish targeting crawfish in 3-6 FOW on some flats. Instead on about the third cast into a normally prime area, hooked up and felt some weight and a head shake, so first thought was nice fish. But then it wasn't fighting like a bass so began questioning whether it was a squawfish or maybe even a sucker. Got sight of it and saw it was a chinook, then it made a few runs. It was interesting trying to net it into a bass net. Definitely had taken the crawfish crank squarely in the mouth. Took a quick pic and let the fish rejoin the dismal run. Quite a cool happening, I guess you never know and won't find out if you stay home instead of fishing.

The bass fishing was not great at all. This was a bit of an exploratory trip to see what things were like after the recent pulse of water. Water temps were in the 52-53 range for the most part. At the end of May? Not happy about those water temps and seemed like the bass felt the same way. Really lethargic and hesitant. Could get a few biters then they would shut off, largest were in the 13-14 range, some small females that looked ready to get on beds, but their fins didn't look like they were there yet.

Best bite was on a hump where water temps were a very different 54-56. A lot chasers and aggression on smolt lures, and consistent bite on the bottom in 20 FOW usually just a light tap and then fish on.

Water vis was okay, about 1.5 feet, hopefully it will warm back up by next week, but with all the fluctuation and weather systems I figure the fish will be confused and hard to predict.

I was over there turkey hunting a few weeks ago and couldn't believe how many big fish I saw jump in lower granite lake. I had myself convinced they must be steelhead, now I'm not as sure.
