Day 3 Report #2 - Potholes - Took my Lady Bass fishing today out in the dunes. Beautiful day with little wind, temps in the mid 70's and water temps in the dunes in the low to mid 60's. Dian has never really caught any LM Bass and I'm far from an expert but thought we'd take the opportunity to try out some fishing in the dunes. Dian was throwing a 4 inch Watermelon/Red Flake Senko and I was working a 5 inch Perch Senko, Casting into and around the flooded willows (don't know exactly what plant they are) using regular unweighted Senko Technique. We probably landed 20+ LM Bass between us and posted are Dians 2 biggest fish (Yes, they are 2 different fish just almost cookie cutter in size). Now for the 'Ones that got away' ....... I lost a Bass that was easily 6+ lbs on the third launch of itself out of the water (Momma is my witness). The second fish lost I have no real way of knowing but ..... I was fishing with a medium weight 6 1/2 foot bass rod, 15 lb braid on my baitcast reel with 15 lb Floro Leader tied directly to the 4/0 hook. I hooked a fish that I never saw outside of the wake it left as it spooled my line set at 15 lb drag. It never jumped as you'd expect an LM to do. A BIG spawning Walleye maybe 10+? Unfortunately I'll probably never know.

Have had zero problem with bugs for the 4 days we've been here so far.

There are some Tiger Muskies and of course Carp and Catfish that would be likely suspects for the big fish that got away. I would bet on it being a Carp. They're fun, slimy and ugly. If you catch one, feed it to the coyotes.

Tiger Muskies in Potholes Reservoir??? !!!! I've never heard of any being in here or of anyone ever catching one here. The Carp may be a possibility but I was running a weedless Senko rig so snagging a Grass Carp seems unlikely. It sure felt like a definite 'take' as the Senko was at rest. So far the consensus from the local fisherman and guides is that it was probably just a BIG Bass that just never jumped. As I recall the speed of the fish pulling away seems faster than you would expect from a Walleye or Cat that would be more of just a strong pull and less of an off to the races pull of my line. The final answer is ..... we'll never know :-(

Carp on Potholes WILL eat a worm, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, been there, done that. Landed a 12 pounder on a spinnerbait IN the carp's mouth during a bass tourny.

That's definitely good to know. That very well could have been what it was then. Thank you.
