Well the log book for the Tin Guppy is officially closed. I hope who ever winds up with her enjoys her as much as I did. So now we have the first report from the log book of the Red Runner, wish it was a more exciting report but all we had was one of those "nice days on the water". My son and I took the new boat out for more of a trial run than an actual fishing trip. Sound like a reasonable excuse for only landing 1 dink walleye that we put back. We were up on the arm from the cemetery to the top of the first narrows and landed our 1 fish in Porcupine Bay. So much for the fishing. The new 190 Sea Runner ST ET was a pure joy. What a ride. Cut through waves and chop that I would have had to slow the Guppy down to a crawl to deal with. Those fancy new seats are pretty cool too. As far as actual fishing space it really isn't much bigger than the Guppy which was a 16 but the cabin space is so much bigger and easier to move around in. To bad I didn't get a chance to use that live well which was the main reason I bought it in the first place. Well then there is the fact that it's RED. Still have the same problem I had with the Guppy, the 8HP kicker won't go slow enough to properly bottom walk for Walleye. Sooner or later, probably later I will have to step up to a bow mount trolling motor, maybe a trolling plate will do for awhile.

congrats on the new boat. While you're waiting for your bow mounted electric you could also try a couple sea anchors, one on either side to see if that gets you at the right speed for those walleye.

Have wondered about sea anchors. Seems like years ago we used one to keep us squared away when anchored on the Columbia for sturgeon. Thought a trolling plate would be less in the way, talked with a guy at Spring Canyon that had one that he liked.

So happy to see you dunked her Mark and the weather yesterday was a good day to do so! Sometimes a nice boat ride, especially in a new boat, is as good or better than fish in the box. The "Red Runner" is officially christened, even with a dink, so it can only get better. :-)

Congrats on the first ride/fish in the Red Runner Mark. There are more fish to come for sure. In the mean time enjoy the "ride"!

Very, very nice Mark. You bought what I would like to have. It would look good behind my red pickup! Sorry the fishing was slow. I am working hard to get my boat back together. Found two holes that were apparently drilled by someone not happy with me or who knows. Gonna have to set an alarm on it in the future when camping and all. Again, great looking boat. TiredMark

Someone drilled holes in you boat, that is just cold. Bummer! I hope you are able to heal her and get her back on the water soon. That boat of yours is so nicely laid out, a true fishing machine.

You might get the slow down by dragging a drift sock behind the boat. I have done that several times when the wind is trying to take charge of where I want to fish. Drift sock slows it all down so the front electric is once again pulling me instead of being a wind toy.

Pretty sure we saw you out there Saturday. We were in the red pontoon. Nice looking boat you have there! Hopefully the fishing picks up this week.

Thanks, and I'm hoping that it will just get better from here. I was bummed that I was still unable to slow the troll down. I had the prop modified just before I bought the new boat. I will take it back and let them have another try at it. They didn't want to overdo it. It's easier to take some more off than to put any back on. At least with an open bow now I can start looking for a bow mount, just need to wait for the money tree to grow a bit.

Yep, drift socks will work, just afraid they will be more annoying than I am willing to put up with. Something else to pack, store, deploy and put away. Plus the extended transom kind of puts the kabosh on landing fish off the stern so then dealing with the socks while trying to land a decent fish is probably more than this old man can deal with.

My boat is pretty much the same size as yours and I utilize drift socks quite often. The trick it to tie them off on the front cleats or the bow rail closest to your windshield. This not only helps slow you down, but keeps the bow on track in windy conditions and the socks out of the way of the downriggers and fish that are being landed. When you are ready to run to a new spot you just pull them into the bow area and go, easy peasy.

agree with G-man, cleats 1/3 back from the bow work great for me and the socks are not in the way. It's really a simple and easy to manage technique for slowing down the boat drift (or speed)

With the number of people lobbing for drift socks I guess I would be nuts not to give them a try,
