First time out to the big lake for my dad and me this year. Launched out of Bellevue. Lines in at 1100 am fished several different spoons to start, tried a few hard lures and wedding ring dodger combo's. Marked fish and bait, but not many bites. Motored down to the south end of mercer = cedar river area around 1 or two and ran a brads kokanee cut plug on my rod with a hoochie dodger combo on my dads. All 3 of todays 15-16 inch cutts came in on my dad's rod with a 2 oz snap weight, After the first fish broke the smile blade pink hoochie in the net, I switched him up to a uv dodger green wiggle hoochie combo to catch two more. I had no bites all day ..... scientifically chasing fish with my downrigger ball. Somehow I always seem to give hime the hot setup. We left at 3pm with 3 fish to show for 4 hours of fishing. Actually a pretty decent day for early march and 44 degree surface temp. Beautiful weather but choppy water conditions all day.

Great job and report! Was going to hit it yesterday as well but that 4 letter work got in the way again! Glad you found some biters and yes that is good for this early and cold water temps as they are! Interesting the green was the magic color for you as I usually go to that color in the fall and use the pink, red or orange to start my season! Gives me something to think about next time out thanks!

I think the hoochie we caught our first fish on was pink orange and maybe yellow? Tequila sunrise color whatever that is. Thanks for the pro tip! What type of pink do you (or the fish) prefer? Like neon fluorescent pink? white-ish pink? translucent pink? I'm always confused when someone recommends pink... I'm colorblind as heck.

To Sideburns:
Glad to hear you had some fish action on the big lake, Lake Washington. Next time you give it a whirl, you might want to try a blue and while color combination on the squid. I've found that color combination using the Ace Hi Fly Junior #344 to be the most effective. In any event, just my two cents worth.

i actually intended to start out with blue and silver hoochies , but being almost complete;y color blind, i tied up and brought a bunch of dk green and white hoochies instead. Guess i need to go back to the store! Thanks.

Nice day! I live just a block up from Coleman Pt. I would love to know “if” the condition were right, would going out in my pontoon worth a go when the fry come out of the Cedar? When do they come out and how about the same for Sammamish too please.

Must be mid to late summer? Ive seen fisherman trolling across the creek mouths around that time anyways. There is a comical looking yellow seahawk inflatable with a gas trolling motor that trolls back and forth across one of the creeks on Sammamish.... Doing like 3-4 mph and with way too much weight in his boat. I saw him clean house on at least one occasion!

Nice work! I have a question: how do you guys distinguish between a rainbow and a cutthroat when fishing Lake WA? I usually don't see the typical red slash marks on the "cutties" that people catch on the big lake. I know it's legal to keep rainbows under 20", but I'm just wondering how people ID the bows v. cutts.

MPM, I am no expert but, the jaw of a Cutthroat will extend past the eye. Where as a Rainbow will not. Hopefully others will weigh in also. Andy

Most of the time, I can tell immediately just by the look and shape of the head..... Kinda becomes second nature after a while. But more definitively, Just as afk says, the jaw of a cutthroat will extend rearward of the eye (with the mouth closed). Also, the cutts have very pronounced teeth way down the tongue. Many rainbows have some toothy tongues as well, just not near as fang like as the cutthroat do. Good luck.

My favorite slingblade. Try using a small dicknite that is red and white behind that slingblade. It would be a rare event for me not to at least get some hits on that combination. What was your trolling speed? Thanks.

I tend to troll 1.5 to 2 mph for cutthroat with most of usual gear. If I'm pulling spoons without attractors, I'll troll up to 3 mph. I wish I would have gotten to my dick nites... they were next up on rotation! I change gear like crazy until we start catching!
