Yesterdays short trip to Cda almost didn't happen, due to family being in town. However, on Friday evening, they all ganged up on me, put my arm behind my back, and made me commit to being on the water early and returning home just after they all got out of bed. I was able to talk the Packernut into joining me at the last minute. (surprise-surprise)
We launched in the middle section of the lake at 5:45 am. The first spinnerbait hit the water at 5:47, and Mike had the first fish on at 5:50. We weren't sure if the fish would be active yet do to the low light conditions at the time, but they proved that pike like to eat breakfast to. :)
It took 13 more minutes, and I put fish #2 in the boat at 6:00 am sharp. A nice 8 1/2 pounder that took a glide bait. We only had a little over three hours to fish and we were off to a good start. The fish had pushed up into a little shallower water and we found them in 5-8 feet. We pulled the boat out at 9:30 and headed home. We got a total of 5 pike in the boat and missed 4-5 others, two of which were hooked and managed to give us the slip. 5 pike in the boat in such a short time rates a 5 in my book. The wind looked like it was going to be an issue all day so leaving early was a little easier than I thought it would be. It's always tough to leave when your finding fish, and we had both gotten bit within the last 15 minutes before we had to leave. I came home and had breakfast with the family, and Mike headed off to watch his daughter score her first goal in a College soccer game. Congrats to her!!! I'm sure it was the first of many to come.
Water temps were 65-67 and water clarity was good when the wind slowed down. Fish were back in the weeds rather than on the outer edges. I think we'll see the bite increase from hear on. I'm optimistic for a great fall season. We haven't really had any big number days this year but the quality fish keep cooperating. I'm really looking forward to seeing that 50 some degree water show up.
