What is your favorite rod for 3/8-1/2 oz twitching jigs? I am looking at a 7'6" Okuma Guide Select Pro extra fast but might end up needing a rod I can break down for a trip to AK this fall.. Going to do a lot of twitching up there. Neither the Okuma or Lami's Twich rod break down...

8/6/2018 6:43:35 PM I like the g-loomis e6x 7'6" rated 6-10lb line rating extra fast action. If your targetting chinook id definately go heavier. I generally use an okuma Ceymar for a reel lined up with either maxima 12lb or stren 14lb. I pretter a fast action paired up with mono because the mono stretches which is forgiven by the extra fast action and i want that fast action for lure control. IMO it is an absolutely ideal rod for this. The e6x 8m reffering to is marketed for walleye not salmon. All the salmon versions have the long butt which hits me under the armpit and is super annoying. Ive been through several rods and reels inclusing rhe penn battle and lines including several types of braid and mono and ive dialed it down to this set up. The jig is a 3/8oz purple body pink head rabbit fur twitching jig. I tiw jigs from 1/8th up to 3/8 but go absolutely no heavier than that, buts thats a personal prefference, I know a guy who goes as heavy as 3/4oz and does well. I prefer 5/16 oz and 3/8 oz with this set up.

8/7/2018 1:28:12 PMI'll check out the E6X. I've had a 7'2 Lews extra fast for twitching, which I have had no trouble throwing any size jig on or bringing in coho. But a couple weeks ago I snapped a good 1/3 of it off on accident. Thanks for the advice Jon.

8/8/2018 8:41:35 PMI was wondering about twitching for Kings, would you say it’s as effective for Kings as it is for Coho. These Puget Sound streams tend to be a bit snaggy drift fishing in the early months when the water is low and is the twitch action the same?

8/8/2018 9:59:21 PM I would say no generally speaking, but it depends on conditions. If you have the right conditions then heck yeah chinook bite jigs fairly well. Generally i find chinook in crappy conditions getting pounded on and they are far less likely to take a jig. In that case you'll want roe or maybe a spoon. Coho on the otherhand are far more forgiving on conditions. Ive sight fished coho in gin clear water with unlimited visibility before and watched them crushing jigs with reckless abandon. Ive also caught coho in 18" chaulky glacier water too. They generally are very receptive to jigs except when very heavily pressured and even then i can still usually eek a few out if i want to. Point is on a scale from 1-10, 10 being most aggressive on jigs coho is a 10 and chinook are about a 4 when it comes to jigs.
