So today I thought I would hit Lake Washington again. After my last couple of outings, which were a total bust, I did not have high expectations. Headed off towards the south end of Mercer Island from Coulon at 8am to the usual trolling spot. One good luck sign was once I got to my fishing spot a small bird landed on my ice chest stared at me for about 15 seconds. It then took a dump on top of my ice chest and flew off. I consider that a luck good sign. The fishfinder had very little on it and I was not encouraged. No bait balls, no fish. One thing that was different on this trip from last week was I had ordered some of the Gods Tooth lures from Cabela's and decided to try them out. I had seen on this forum of other people using them and thought I would order some since I did not have any. Put a sling blade flasher and the blue and silver gods tooth spoon on and started my troll. No bait no scent. No more than 5 minutes into my troll the first fish was on. A 14 inch trout. Continued my troll along the south end of Mercer Island and continually got hit about every 10 to 15 minutes. Total fish count for the day was 15. Five were lost before getting to the boat. 10 released, including 2 salmon and 5 fish were retained. All fish were between 14 to 18 inches in size. The bite died off after 1pm or so and I fished till 5pm. Only caught 2 fish after 1pm.

To say that I'm in the I am a believer in the gods tooth spoon now would be an understatement. I have no idea why I have never gotten these before. If you don't have some of these I would definitely recommend you pick some up. I used that spoon most of the day except for a small stretch with the wedding ring after the bite died off but the gods tooth out fished everything today. It was an amazing relaxing day to be out on the water and it even rained for a while which was great. I was the only boat out there on the south end of the lake today trolling. Saw a couple of bass fisherman fishing around docks though. Looks like the south end of Lake Washington is back in business so get out there and go get them. Most productive area was SW corner of Mercer Island (hotspot marked). All fish were caught between 30 to 55 ft. Bigger fish were deeper. Based that depth range from the buoy data and the thermocline. If the bite would have continued all day I would have rated it a 5. It was a epic and funny day of fishing. Be safe. G.

Great report sir. Your comment about the bird crap being good luck cracked me up. I am buying my annual pass today so I will see you out there soon I also am a believer in the God's tooth spoons. Were you using the double or single hook?

Just like they came in the package like you saw. I had 3 fish go airborne with that lure and that is usually when they spit the hook. I need to modify them with a small swivel between the hook and the lure to prevent that. All the fish I caught with it were solidly hooked. Had one take-down that I thought the lure had hung up on something submerged in the water because it was a slow steady pull. Almost pulled the rod tip into the water. Then it did a big double pump and came off. I was 40ft down in 105ft of water when that happened. That was some type of big fish for sure. Hope to see you out there sometime Mark. I usually only fish on M - F when I go out. Weekends on lake WA as summer approaches I avoid.

Very good report! Lake Washington can be very hard to beat at times. From my fishing experiences up at the north end of the lake at this time of the year, the best lure color combination seems to be something that is blue with white or silver. The God's tooth which you used with success falls within that color combination. Personally, I prefer the Ace Hi Fly Junior with blue spatter back #344. If you ever get the chance, give it a try down there in the south end of the big lake. It seems to draw in the larger fish sizes.

I'm out there most weekends, with good and bad days, have tried the same spoon with no luck. just wanted to know how long your leader was off the sling blade, maybe I've got the wrong length

Kiyus, I have an 11 inch leader on that Gods Tooth spoon lure behind a 5" dodger. Fish went nuts over it for sure. Good luck out there! -G

I fished the north end on Thursday. Launched at Kenmore. Got a Rainbow about 15" off Kirkland, Rainbow for sure, no slash, released it. Later got a really, really nice fish. Fought hard and came out of water couple times released it. I think it was easily over 20", very bright, looked like a 3-4 pound Steelhead, no slash. Small dodger and a Brads mini cutplug, with Tuna inside. Just north of Champagne Pt. Both 40 ft on the DR, and 60 FOW.

Lake Wash is closed to retention of Rainbows over 20" for most of the year. I don't know but is there a late winter/spring Steelhead in the Lake?

Just remember that Cutts don’t always have the throat slash. The easiest way to identify them is the jaw going beyond the eyeball. Not a lot of rainbows in the lake.
