I made a "possible" big mistake on Saturday this weekend (1/27/18)...... I went to the NW Sportsman's Show in Puyallup with one of my co-workers...

The weather was good-n-nasty on Saturday during the show with lots of wind and some rain showers, and of course I may have spent too much of my wife's money on tackle and a new not-so-spendy kokanee rod that I am sure my wife will complain about when she discovers that I have yet one more rod...

Woke up this morning and was thinking about spending time putting some lures together from some of the tackle-craft parts that I have accumulated in the past few years, but I soon found out that the weather had calmed down quite a bit overnight with the wind dying and the rain showers holding off I "felt" that I NEEDED to get my lil' boat hooked up and actually take my "first" fishing trip of the year 2018. (yeah for me... finally)

Ran over to Beaver Lake in Sammamish to spend some "wet line time" and I really wasn't too concerned that I was launching the boat late in the afternoon, after all, it wasn't raining, the wind wasn't blowing and I had my good rain coat and bibs on just in case the dark looking clouds opened up on me.

Only found a few other vehicles at the WDFW launch and I was quick to drop my boat into the sink and head out for quick trip. Started out flatlining one of my favorite, simple 50/50 Dick Nite (size 1) on one of my cheapie-but-fun Eagle-Claw Kokanee rods. Headed away from the launch and let a good 60 feet of line out as I started putzing around with my handheld GPS unit to try to keep track of my speeds.

Had one fish take a few swipes at said Dick Nite spoon as I was heading into the larger end of the lake but the fish did not return to take a good bite on the hook even though I sped the boat a little bit "just in case". I tried a little while longer with that same spoon before I changed up to another presentation for a short while which produced that same sad results.

As the sprinkles started to gain in size and frequency I returned to my 50/50 and I started heading back over the same spot that I've had good results in the past years. BAAAAMMMMM!!!!! The bend on the Eagle Claw rod was positive and I knew that I had a decent size "taker" for a little "tug fun".

After a short, tense play with the fish, in which I have "celebrated" TOO SOON a fair number of times to end up having the fish spit the hook out before the fish was in the net, I was able to slip said fish into my little net and THEN start to think about what we were going to serve with MY fish for Monday night dinner....

I have found when I cannot fish, I buy A LOT of fishing gear. LOL. I think if I could fish more, I would really spend less.

My father in law thinks that I should put up some peg-board in the garage and hang up all my "extra" lures and gear.... he says that I am probably one of the better stocked "tackle shops" in the Seattle area..... :-)

The yellow Eagle Claw Koke rods are nice and soft and sure help make fishing for smaller fish fun. The 18" rainbow added some good fun on this rod, but I don't think that it could be considered too light for any Western Washington trout lakes. I picked up a 8' Berkley Lightning Rod UL at the Sportsman show and need to decide which rod (Eagle Claw or Berkley) will be paired with my new Diawa Lexa 100 reel that should be here this week. All this rain has REALLY been making me think about nicer weather and FISHING a lot these days.....
