Tiger Muskies on the prowl.
So its around 6am, we unload the crestliner and me and the girlfriend start trolling our way to the south end of the lake.
w/ 4 colors of lead line, a medium size orange reflective dodger, and a firetiger apex, she lands a 2.5 trout. I get a couple bites but nothing in the boat.
We make it to the south end of the lake where it shallows, and get our lures ready for some spin casting. my very first cast I throw out a black spinnerbait w/ a single silver blade and reel it back to the boat.
I watch it as it returns to the boat, nothing chasing it (so I think) and pull it out of the water to cast again.
WOOSH! 50" Tigre Muskie jumps 1' out of the water 2' from our boat (i'm in the nose chair) and tries to get it. Then swims off slowly. What a beast. Also not being half awake yet it scared the crap out of me.
I quickly regain my composure and cast that bad boy back out there. Aprox half an hour later another mustky, this one a tad smaller, maybe 45" chases it to the boat again. I notice it this time, and gently stop reeling. Boom the muskie strikes, I pull up on my medium pole as hard as I can, and yell FISH ON BABY!!!!!
Now Nicole had thought I was full of crap about the first one, because she hadn't seen it working the back end of the boat. However this one I hooked about 5 feet out and 6 feet down from the boat. She was ready with the net.
That musky was pissed. I reeled him in a short ways, and as soon as he descided he didn't want to come to the boat, he turned his head and sawed thru my 10 lb test. Lure dropped to the bottom, line went loose, and tigre musky slowly swam off as if he had won the battle!
That fish had managed to break the tip eyelit of my medium action 7' quantam spin casting pole(go figure).
So I jimmie rigged my pole, tied up a steel leader, and realizing I was out of flat black spinner baits, I switched to a red/black w/ same blade. a bunch of casts covering the nose of the boat and a few smokes later, no more muskies.
So we took off to Ruby's where my buddy and his family are camping for the weekend. Get the boat to the dock and I look in the way and about 10' from the dock in 2 feet of water is this 30-40" musky just chill'n inbetween the weeds. So I point it out to everyone and all the little kids got excited.
I then descided to take a few tries at it, so I flicked my red/black spinner bait w/ steel leader about 2' feet passed it, started reeling, and even though it got tons of weeds on it, as long as that lil blade flashed, that musky chased it all over the place. But due to the last of depth, tons of weeds, and how close it was to us, I couldn't get it on, however it was just cool watching it chase my lure time after time. Eventually one of my casts was too close to it and it spooked, man those guys can move if they want to. A few minutes it was back in the same exact spot and I was casting at it again. No luck
0/3 on the muskies, however it was super entertaining for the day, and now my girlfriend won't swim in Silver Lake. We told my dad later that night and all he had to say was, well you can swim there, just don't wear a toe ring :)
