I wanted to try the coho fishing on Lake Washington, something that I had never done. I read rseas report and tried to duplicate his technique and of course results. While I learned some stuff and had fun, the fishing did not result in catching.

The technique I tried was to use herring strips or herring in the Pro Troll caps. Not having done this before, I found some good videos on YouTube that walk you through it pretty well. I am not sure I got the toothpick part exactly right but it held well and the herring spun really nicely at 1.5-2.0 mph.

After launching at Magnuson Park at dawn, I headed across the lake to Kirkland and then south to the Yarrow Point area. I used a downrigger set at 45-55' with the setback from the ball at 35'. After talking to a couple of more knowledgeable fisherman later at the launch, they recommend a much longer set back of up to 100'. One of them suggested staying within 20 feet or so of the bottom up to say 100 feet of water even if you are not marking fish. I will try these suggestions the next time I try this fishery. The best part of today was talking with these guys, Matt and Jasper, about fishing and their willingness to share ideas, gear, stories and techniques.

I have a nice fish finder but saw very few marks on it. I did see several gill netters as I trolled south from Kirkland. One boat was pulling in their nets and looked to have a salmon in it every 15 feet or so. The next time out I will check the netting times so I can avoid them. If it's unavoidable, then I will likely go to other fisheries.

I keep my boat at the Edmonds Marina dry storage. Yesterday was good. My friend and I got our 4, all marked, and done by 9. Today not good. Went out by myself and had one fish on that didn't stick. A tribal gill netter came in about 10 and his net must have been 500 feet. His first set he had very few fish, so he picked his nets and left after only an hour or so. I dint see a single net fly. Need some rain and no more nets, although they can net pretty much as long as they want to.

No I was fishing in the salt just south of Edmonds. I've fished the Lake a few times for Coho but not for several years.
