Mike Carey and I hit the lake on a mission to catch the elusive Mackinaw. We marked them all over the lake, but couldn't get a single one to bite. We tried all sorts of lures, some with herring, but had no success. After realizing we weren't going to get them to bite we switched gear and tactics and targeted the Rainbow Trout.

The trout were much more willing to take our offerings. Once we realized they were in the 30'-35' range we were able to bring a limit on board. Our first taker was a very nice specimen with some weight on him. We managed to coax a few more into the net and as we were calling it a day and bringing the lines in Mike reeled up another nice one.

We'll likely have a video of our outing available at some point so if you're a fan of Deer Lake keep an eye out for it.

Deer lake is overpopulated with lake trout and that is why the WDFW opened the season on March first several years ago instead of April to help thin them out. Deer lake was first planted in 1890 with lake trout and the fish have really flourished ever since. Summertime fishing is better with tubes as the fish will not usually chase a trolled lure.
